Internet News   Internet News : SpursEngine a Stream Video Decoder based on Cell
posted by Raffaele on 25-Sep-2007 13:14:12 (1544 reads)
SpursEngine it is a beautiful chip with a strange name...

Toshiba's new high-performance stream chip SpursEngine integrates 4 Synergistic Processing Element (SPE) cores derived from the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.) developed by Toshiba, Sony, and IBM for accelerating multimedia processing. There are 4 out of 8 SPE from original Cell.

The chip works in cooperation with a host CPU and combines advanced image processing technology to perform stream processing and image recognition of video sources., plus adds hardware dedicated to decoding and encoding MPEG-2 and H.264 video.

SpursEngine utilizes XDR DRAM -- a memory interface technology developed by chip interface manufacturer Rambus.

Prototype of SpursEngine operates at a clock frequency of 1.5GHz and consumes power at 10 to 20 watts.

If only Amiga were in better hands
