A true visionary indeed, he will be missed by so many communities that he touched.

A very sad day.

I am sad. I have admired him from afar for quite a while now. He certainly made good use of his time.

Oh my... this is a great loss to the human race...another wonderful mind leaves us.

A huge inspiration to me and so many countless others.

He'll be dearly missed.

A sad day. I remember him for 2001:A Space Odyssey.

R.I.P. Arthur C Clarke.

Thanks for making me laugh earlier when I was reading about the Flat Earth Society, before I read this sad news.

Quote:
The flat Earth faced challenges posed by photographs of the earth from space and later the moon. Member Samuel Shenton remarked: "It's easy to see how a photograph like that could fool the untrained eye." The society took the position that the Apollo Moon landings were a hoax, staged by Hollywood and based on a script by Arthur C. Clarke, a position also held by some others not connected to the Flat Earth Society.

In a March 2001 message to a friend, Clarke facetiously responded to the society's claims as follows:

"I've written to [former NASA director] Dan Goldin saying I was never paid for this work and unless he does something quickly he'll be hearing from my killer lawyers, Geldsnatch, Geldsnatch & Blubberclutch."

I've been dreading this day since Kubrick died (March 7th 1999).

I think a fitting tribute to Clarke would be to have each geostationary
comsat go dark for one minute in the next few days/weeks (he is
often credited with figuring out the orbit that most comsats, satelite
television services, etc. use to stay at the same point above the
Earth's surface 24/7).

Guess I'll have to watch 2001 again tonight (it's quite lovely on blu ray).
It still irks me a little to see how few of the events/technologies portayed
in the film (the setting now roughly 7 years in the PAST) are still more
or less fiction (in the sense that we still have no computers, moonbases,
or manned spacecraft that are at the level of achievement/advancement
Kubrick/Clarke envisioned for the world back in 1968). I mean it's not as
though they didn't do their homework - most of the technology in the film
is studiously researched to a point still unsurpassed in most SF on film.
It was the modern world itself that has come up short, not Kubrick or
Clarke's vision!

RIP Arthur C. Clarke

One of my favourite SF authors of all time. I particularly enjoyed his books 'Childhood's End' and 'Rendezvous with Rama' both of which I read years ago, but I suppose he with be forever associated with the movie '2001 A Space Odyssey' based on his short story 'The Sentinel'.

As a scientist he was years ahead of his time and is generally considered to be the father of modern satellite communications having described the perfect orbit for communications satellites in a paper published in October 1945, 20 years before the first 'Early Bird' satellite was launched.

Together with Andy Warhol both were the Best Known Amiga Users in the world.

We will miss him...

We will miss also his ideas on space colonization and terraforming, and mainly his fantastic books.

RIP Arthur.

A few years ago in one of the mags I used to read Amiga Format probably there was an article about Arthur C Clarke reviving his interest in Amigas using Vista to produce pictures of terraforming Mars. Does anyone know where I can find them, or a copy of the article? I've done some googling already, but no luck.

Very sad indeed, a truly great man, and by far my favourite author. His influence will range far into the future...
