Hardware News   Hardware News : M-Audio Revolution 5.1 supported
   posted by DaveAE on 23-Mar-2008 19:39:24 (4713 reads)
With the latest Envy24HT AHI driver and Mixer just uploaded to OS4depot, the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 sound card is now supported. See http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Revolution51-main.html for the product's features. Although expensive, this card has great sound quality for both recording and playback.

Some notes on this card: headphone out is supported, but you cannot monitor the inputs with it (this is a hardware restriction). Also, surround sound is not supported.

The latest Envy24HT is also a must for ESI Juli@ users, giving much better playback quality and enabling analogue in monitoring.

For people with A1's without the onboard audio chip, the latest Mixer has an option 'NO_VIA' to suppress the VIA686B's sound controls and some additional fixes.

@DaveE

Thanks for your contribution. The question I can bring up is; what does this mean for a Micro? Do they benefit from these upgrades? I'm not using a soundcard as the one and only slot found on a Micro is occupied by a SCSI-card.

The driver is only for soundcards that has the envy24ht chips and the internal sound on A1/uA1 that you have isnt the same. So no changes. However you can always update your mixer with this new version to be uptodate :) You can always check the readme as it shows all the changes.

Wow, I found a M-Audio Revolution 5.1 card on the shelf at our office.
It works nice in my AmigaOne XE. The sound is better than the internal VIA/AC97.

Dave, what is the best way for us to contribute? I would like to support this driver and OS4.

Maybe a Paypal link?
Do you need sound cards?
Should I buy AudioEvolution for OS4?

Thanks for the great work. :D

I do have a paypal account at paypal AT audio-evolution.com. Perhaps you can join Kicko in funding an ESI Juli@ for me. Everything is welcome, even sound cards (I don't currently own a Revo 5.1 either, I have to send it back to Paolo Vanni who was kind enough to lend me one).

Nice work.

Do we actually have any software that outputs in surround sound? There's no point in getting the speakers if the software doesn't even use them.

Which higher end sound-cards would people recommend? (preferably affordable ones)

Hans

No, we don't. AHI does have a 7.1 mode, but it's a bit 'bolted on'. There is no surround panning, mixdown or speaker configuration. Only the emu10kx driver has the 7.1 mode implemented.

What would you call 'affordable'?

I'm not completely sure. Seeing as I'm not a professional artist, and I won't be running a recording studio, it's hard to justify spending several hundred dollars on a sound-card. Getting rid of the background hiss my SB-live has, both in recording and playback, would be nice.

There shouldn't be that much hiss on an SB live (are you sure it isn't your amp/speakers that hiss?), but I'd recommend a 2nd hand Terratec Aureon Sky (they don't make them anymore unfortunately), or this Revo 5.1 card which can be had for 70 USD it seems from amazon.com. Heh, didn't know they sold electronics...

There is other way to support DaveAE too. Example. Ask DaveAE if he can get docs for ESI Maya44 card (with or without the plugin card). Ask if he is interested and have time to do a driver. Give him the card as present (several people could contribute). That way we would have more uptodate card drivers and many people would be happy. If he dont have time than you know. :)
He has AE5 to spend time on and the private life too :)

@DaveAE

I found one problem. When recording and using 24 bit input (analog) mode in AE I get loud white noise in the right channel (ESI Juliet). No problems with the left channel, in 16 bit mode or with the old driver. No problems in my cables.

24-bit recording is not supported in AE or any program.
