Software News   Software News : New version of Cinnamon Writer available
   posted by Desler on 5-Apr-2008 21:01:24 (5225 reads)
It took a long time but finally: The latest version of Cinnamon Writer is available for download . desler.be

Read more for details.

Cinnamon Writer (CW) is a WYSIWYG writer application under development. The main objective of CW is to be a small efficient word processor with the most often used features seen in other professional word processors.

See screenshots HERE

Version 0.5 is much faster than the previous version. It offers most of the basic and most often used functionality expected from a word processor (selectable fonts, font size, text alignment, line space, text color, highlight color, bullets, underline, super/subscript etc). The documents are saved in RTF format that ensures maximum compatibility with other word processors. At a later stage of development, other save formats will be available.
The icons set used in CW are the work of Martin "Mason" Merz (Thank you Martin)

I am also announcing the coming opening of Cinnamon Projects.
The purpose of Cinnamon Projects is to speed up the development of CW by utilizing some the very gifted coders on the amiga scene. Since I have come to the realization that writing an application like this single handedly, is near impossible, I have decided to use a larger part of the donations I have received and hopefully will continue to receive, to fund coders who are interested in contributing to the application. A new section will open on desler.be in the near future where different projects are announced together with the amount of money a coder will receive upon completion of the project.
An example of a project could be a printer class that will handle all the Amiga specific calls required to add printing capability to CW. The prize given upon completion will range from 50-150 euro depending on the scale of the project and of course, the amount of donations I have received

I haven’t been able to test this software on a classic AOS4 setup, so please let me know if a specific setup is not working. The stability of this version has not been throughout tested and the undo/redo feature is currently not available. Therefore save often and save different versions of your document when using CW!!

I really hope that you will find this application useful. Please don’t hesitate to report bugs/crashes/ideas and perhaps give donations/beer on desler.be

Finally... Donate. Scientific case studies have shown that people who donated experienced 33.4% fewer crashes

(Next thing is this all-talked printing-thingie then and the allmighty Browser, and games after the little Jewled-clone we all bought for support to get nice sw. Awaits them all;)

Hope the best at these faint-Amigatimes, the sun might rise tommorow. PR

Ok. Go on and test the program and bugger Desler for the bugs after reading all instructions now! ;) Then donate a few?

Looks nice. Good work.

Get a good basic work processor skeleton going with RTF capability, and it'll be very useful. Although I'm not so hot about what appears to be a single window interface with custom widgets in their own windows inside, it's not my project to change and that's subjective anyway.

Might be nice to make an RTF text editor GUI widget available as a library too, so you can reuse it.

As regards full word processors, whilst people say that you only need to implement 80% of the functions, different people use a different 80%!

However I think that Apple's iWork Pages application is a good example of something that does 80% quite well. Take a look for inspiration. There's no need to follow Microsoft's word processing paradigm either, strict style based editors have their place and can enforce template usage and proper structure.

How big is this thing? After 8MB of download on a dialup connection, I cancelled. How can an unfinished word processor be larger than PageStream, FinalWriter and WordWorth7 combined; especially when it's lha compressed?

You cancelled 360Kb too early...
Everybody under 4MB connection here is quite lame.

It says on the download page, in a box next to 0.52:
Quote:
Downloads 219
File Size: 8.63 MB

So it is that big

@Xenic

It is that big because it still contains debug information. It is the only way I can figure out the crashlogs from people. Perhaps I can send you a CD with the program if you are still interested? Just PM me your address.

@All
Thank you for all your comments. Im really interested in bug reports or ideas for the next version. Furthermore I have received some donations the last two days that allow me to think about hiring coders for the project (Thank you to all who have donated). Therefore: If you have any knowledge about coding printer applications, please contact me

Hmmm. If I had waited another minute or 2 I would have had it Usually IBrowse D/L manager will show the size of a download. Apparently your site isn't sending that info because IBrowse listed it as unknown. I stopped the D/L because I've had some downloads that end up being 20-30 MB when IBrowse lists the size as unknown. I must have missed the size that others state is listed on your site but I can D/L it if it's 8.33 MB. When files get much larger than that, the odds of a successful D/L completion on dialup seem to drop dramatically for me. It's not really a problem now that I know the size. Thanks for responding though.

@Xenic

You can restart your failed downloads in Ibrowse and continue where you left off. When I was on dial-up my ISP used to kick you after 2 hours of connection so I often had to do this with 100MB + downloads.

I'd say it was big partly because it contains a ~2.8Mb Windows BMP file (amongst other BMP files) which is uses for a fancy backdrop behind the window. Maybe it should include a JPEG version of ommit it altogether for beta testing.

You can compile a program, create a stripped binary for distribution, and still use the unstripped one to trace crashlogs. See here for information on how it's done. More recently I brought this up again on utilitybase.com as I was wondering if the -ggdb had any performance penalties; it doesn't. The thread contiains an important note about a binutils bug. See here. I kind of wish that gcc would create separate debug files by default. It's important to be able to use crash-logs even on released (non-beta) binaries.

@slash

Agreed. BMP files are uncompressed and huge. Using datatypes you can use JPEG, PNG, or whatever you fancy.

@Hans

Since he uses SDL for portability he could use SDL_Image, which has support for jpeg, png and tiff formats.

Using datatypes with SDL is quite easy though:
