Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : individual Computers: new address, Catweasel driver update
   posted by Wiesel on 13-Jul-2008 19:32:31 (4523 reads)
In may of this year, we have moved to new premises with more than three times the space that our office in Aachen had to offer. Since we still don't run a retail shop, we have moved to the pictureque area of Simmerath, located in the natural park of the northern Eifel region. With this new location, there's also a change in our shipping partner: Parcels within Germany and the EU are now shipped with DPD.

new drivers for Catweasel MK4
The new drivers V 2.5.0.0 for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (32-bit versions) are fixing a few bugs in handling 5,25 inch drives. The new imagetool V3.1 can now read and write three new formats:

* VersaDOS HD
these disks have been provided by Perfint tech from India. They are used to store medical imaging data. With new, faster computers now being able to retrieve data from older medical equipment, lots of money can be saved, and up-to-date medical service with modern image processing algorithms can be provided at lower cost. We're especially happy about this use case, as it has extremely high value to threshold countries.

* VersaDOS 3HDDI
these disks have been provided to us by Matisa from Switzerland, a company that makes machines for railroad track construction and maintenance. The disk was mangled and obviously written on a very bad drive, but we managed to retrieve enough data for implementing this new format.

* HP4145
this disk was provided to us by Bosch (Hildesheim, Germany), where it is used in semiconductor test-equipment.

Another new feature of the imagetool is the possibility to save d64/d71/d81 images of Commodore disks with additional error information. The automatic recognition of disk formats now gives a list of possible formats instead of stopping at the first positive try, which makes the function a lot more useful. You can find more details in the readme-files of the archive:

Download: CWMK42500.zip (385 KBytes)

New Catweasel MK4 controllers will be back in stock in august of this year. To bridge this bottleneck in supply, we have cleared our safety-stock of Catweasel MK4 controllers. To our knowledge, all pre-orders are served now. Our retail partners are taking orders that will be shipped as soon as the new production run is available.

OS4 drivers are obviously not in the works, despite more than one programmer having recieved the multidisk.device source code for OS4 porting. These programmers never got back to me.

I can't do anything more than *enable* them to do what they want to (at least one of them even got a free controller). I guess everybody knows that there's not much money in the OS4 business, and if there's nobody seriously interested in driver development, I won't be able to free any budget to get "someone serious" interested in this.

Anyway, I'm still open to anybody who has a track record of successful OS4 development (that is: has the machine, has the knowledge and the time) - if someone like that is reading this, please contact me through the webform of my website.

NutsAboutAmiga did start a CW Mk4 driver that is available on OS4 Depot (here) and I can confirm it works for reading 880 DD disks on OS4.

I don't know what the status of his development is at the moment as it hasn't been looked at for a while.

I did start a keyboard driver to use in OS4, which turned into more of a patch to upload the correct Mk4 firmware to the FPGA as OS4 already supported CW keyboards, but I never investigated the possibility of extending it to support floppies.

I'll have a look at NAA's source code and ask some knowledgable folks about what would be involved in creating a kickstart module that supported the CW floppy controller if it's present.

Don't expect anything Real Soon Now though, I'm busy with other work for the next couple of weeks.

@Wiesel

I never recived multidisk.device sourecode.

I ported the Linux CW3/4 driver to AmigaOS4, I even sent you e-mails.

I have driver that support 1.44mb disk, but its bugged, disk buffer stuff does not work as I intended, thats way the only driver available is only 880k.

I can fix it, but have no personal motivation for doing it.

NutsAboutAmiga:

Please contact me through the webform. I have no eMail from you (at least none that I can remember), so I assume that my fairly aggressive spamfilter has deleted it. If you're using the webform, please make sure that there's no valid URL in the text, as that will identify your message as spam again.

I'm all for OS4 support, but there's no budget available to pay anyone. My hope would be that the multidisk.device source code can motivate you. Maybe a shareware model (PayPal donations?) for your OS4/MK4 driver could bring some money into your pocket?

Jens, thanks for your continued support to the Amiga community, great stuff.

You can probably guess what I'm going to ask next, but what the hell... any CloneA news?

No real Clone-A news that I want to publish. The project is HUGE and it's being worked on regularly. My personal standard for a product that shall revive the Amiga fever is extremely high.

You can expect a lot, and I'm sure that the "A-Team" (two programmers for the user interface, Oliver and I for the hardware) will meet or exceed your expectations.

@amigakit

Do you have any 3", 3.5" and 5 1/4" Drive on sale to use with this Card?

I got an old Amstard cpc6128 that I want to retrive some data from.

That's a sorry state of affairs. I'm sorry I ever bought them.
