hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Workbench file lister project assigned
posted by rigo on 10-Aug-2008 20:06:17 (2430 reads)
The Workbench file lister project on OpenAmiga has been assigned to Vicente Gimeno (Ami603)

The workbench file lister project is about creating a replacement file lister for the workbench that resembles the one used in Diropus and Diropus Magellan. With functions like an address bar and user definable file operations. Read more at the project page.

Ami603 has already done a lot of the initial development for a lister project. A preview of what Ami603 has done so far can be seen here: listersnap.png

He is the process of cleaning up the code a bit, and he needs help from fellow AmigaOS4 developers. Particularly someone with process/task knowledge to help him build a separate core task that takes care of copying/moving and renaming files.

Feel free to contact him on OpenAmiga.org or in the #AmigaDev channel on irc.amigaworld.net if you can help with the Workbench file lister project or simply just to provide some input.

About OpenAmiga.org
OpenAmiga.org is an organization in the making that aims at enhancing the AmigaOS4 experience, acting as an Amiga community based research and development department. OpenAmiga.org aims at providing finished enhancements for AmigaOS4 that Hyperion can include in their AmigaOS4 distribution, research advanced topics and act as a developer resource for AmigaOS4 developers.

News posters, if an item is only relevant to OS4, please say so in the announcement, rather than wasting everyone's time like this.

Well, it's in AmigaOne category, so it's either OS4 or Linux
Plus, OpenAmiga project (iirc) is an Open Source initiative, so there's no reason why you couldn't back port the lister to OS3.x

Ahhh, this is just what I've always wanted Workbench to have. Great stuff!

I'm not against open development, far from that.

But isn't this ruining GuruMeditation's effort to port Magellan to OS4.x ?
Wouldn't it be better to be a bit less "open", and team up with GuruMeditation and Hyperion to bring some (most) Magellan features to OS4.x (against some royalties) ?

(I'm used to the way Magellan allows customisation of about everything.)

I have been musing the best design for the lister for a long time now and a few years ago did some mock ups using a graphics package. Wondered if they would be of any interest?

@AmigaPhil
I thought that GuruMeditation's commercial port of DOpus to OS4 had been abandoned? (Can't recall the reason.)

Er, How many workbench's are currenlty in development for OpenAmiga to get involved with?

Clue: It isn't the 68k version.

Sheesh.

But before starting new project like that, is not better to wait until the release of amiga os 4.1, to know what is done and what isn't ?..

a big part of this is doing things that are needed, and the only way to do that is to talk to the OS4 developers to see what there is no time for, but would be nice to have.

dont worry about crossover.

Really ? (Last time I heard about the project, it was going well.)

GuruMeditation's web site is closed, but there is message which says:
Quote:
During 2007, the workload increased while the man-hours available did not. However, we are working on re-creating our web shop from the ground up, but this is a process which will take some time to complete. During this time we have not been idle, we are currently working with a number of software projects which will benefit the AmigaOS 4 users.
