Something very interesting starting at 19:42:

Rich: "What about expanding, adding (to the) instruction set with custom binaries?"
Gunnar: "The best guy to ask these CPU questions would be probably Jens, who's missing right now. (...) He is helping us with the 070."
Rich: "Really?"
Gunnar: "Yes, he's taken the lead on the 070 design right now."

I realize that there are probably a couple of hundred thousand guys in Germany called Jens, but could they be talking about Jens Schoenfeld? he has the expertise, but he's also working on something that could be considered a competitor. If Jens Schoenfeld is involved with the NatAmi project, he would give it a huge dose of credibility.

While it would be cool, it isn't Schoenfeld. It's someone totally different. Although, I don't think the NATAMI guys would mind if Schoenfeld contacted them and wanted help..

But I'm thinking since Jen has his own projects going on, this is unlikely. But hey, there is always the dream.

Aah, that's too bad then. I thought it was too good to be true, but where's the harm in asking

I was a bit (pleasantly) surprised to hear about the video input, I didn't think it was going to have one. With the OpenToaster project, the NatAmi could become a great entry level video editing console.

Yes, with the video input the Amiga comes full circle, starts its "new" life as it began 20 years prior... who would have thought!

@spotUP

Jens Schoelfeld is very well known for releasing quality Amiga and C64 addons, and he's very experienced with FPGAs and CPLDs. I'm sure the other Jens is competent too, he's just a bit of an unknown.

Is anyone else having a problem with streaming the podcast?

Its sounds like the guys are smurfs on helium to me!

Im using IE 7 on Vista. I suppose a download and listen would solve it but im just curious why its being weird.

@Amiboy

Must be a Windows Vista issue, sounds fine on XP & OS X.

@amiboy

I'm listening to it right now in IE7 on Vista SP1 (I listened to it before in Opera) and it sounds fine. You may have a dud audio driver, especially if you're still using drivers that are more than six months old - early Vista drivers for pretty much everything (but especially Creative sounds cards) sucked.

the ART team should run a compressor on the audio...level out the dynamics in the audio, one minute you cant hear anything, the next its way too loud...compression is how radio stations level the audio out. T-Racks is a great software compressor, but free ones will do the job too...

Also considering rich is always much louder than everyone else every time, he should drop his level a bit

does anyone on the team know anything about compression?

From our editing labs:
Quote:

The vocals was not adjusted correctly, so it was a hard job fixing the sound
in the edit. Regarding the Compression: there is a compressor on overall sound.
though it might not sound like it. But we promise a much better audio image
from here on out. thanks for the reaction and we will try to apply the correct
measures to give the listeners a pleasant time. :)

I have compressed it again with more aggressive settings than what your applying, also i have dropped everything below 40hz on the eq... there was also too much low freq for vocals muddying things up....its much nicer to listen to now...
but not all amiga listeners know about audio editing...

give it shortest attack possible, longest release possible, a higher ratio and a lower threshold...

have a little play with it, you can make it much more pleasurable to listen to than what weve been getting...

I understand what you are saying.
But i wonder about the result you get on the vocals
from Rich Lawrence after applying those compression settings.
Anyhow, Measures has been taken to prevent this in the future.
It has been discussed and from now on there is gonna be
a pre-show adjustment to the different co/hosts microphones to
level everything out on the final recording.

One of the problems you get with recording sound over the
net is background noise, and if you compress the sound to much
you get a constant wall of noise in the background, making it really
irritating to listen to.

Btw. we are using Waves / Rcomp for the overall sound,
and a L2 ultramaximizer on the whole thing in the end to
bring the peaks to the max.

i will upload my result to 4shared and post up a link here, you can check it out...
Rich isnt so punchy and the lower bits are much more audible... the whole dynamics are much more level...

I used waves audiotrack...its a compressor, eq, gate in 1 in this case
but I also recommend you try a multiband compressor such as waves C4 instead of Rcomp and removing some bass...

I used T-racks limiter to boost volume...I have never heard a software limiter as good.

PS - i have taken an mp3, run fx and rendered an mp3 again from that so if I had source, it would do an even better job....although the result still sounds good...

http://www.4shared.com/file/61355369/65882cd1/art_compressed.html

have a listen...

With all due respect, i didnt mean to tread on any ones toes, but I am a pro musician and I know it can be leveled much more than what has been done...and clearly too...

you can hear in this version everything is level and there is minimal noise....most of the imperfection there is from re-rendering a low bit rate mp3 to another low bit rate mp3...

if you like this version im happy to go thru step by step how to achieve it...

your main issue is rcomp is boosting up too much low freq that needs to be killed with the EQ and your compressor settings are no way near aggressive enough...

in any production, you cant even hear things below 20hz, so remove it, your mix will be clearer...

in this case, a human voice is just plain hard to understand with so much low freq...
I ended up rolling off everything below 100hz in this version......

again, i wouldnt use Rcomp for this....
