Software News   Software News : Compositing demos
posted by Hyperionmp on 7-Sep-2008 15:29:20 (8621 reads)
Rogue has uploaded two small demo programs to os4depot.net that show off some of the possibilities of the compositing engine of AmigaOS 4.1. Don't expect any miracles, though, they're very simple and just there to show that compositing goes beyond rounded corners.

AmigaOS 4.1 required!

I do not use AmigaONE and AmigaOS.

Can you describe us, please, what kind of graphic effects or goodies are doing these demos and the importance of it?

Screenshots! I want screenshots!

Hans

EDIT: Actually, I want my copy of OS 4.1. But I'll have to be patient.

@Raffele

There are two small utils.. one called ScreenThumb and one called Lens

The ScreenThumb opens a small window 100x100 (I think) and takes the workbench screen and draw it in the window, ofcoarse scalled down. The cool thing is it updated in real time.. meaning that any change on the wb will show in the window at once.

The Lens zooms the hole screen when you press the Right mouse button, it zoom at the position of the mouse pointer, its also done in real times, so screen updates gets zoomed at once.. this is really cool to play around with.

Quite useless for the developers as there is no source-code provided: only binaries...

AmigaOS 4.1 Composition Engine Part 1

AmigaOS 4.1 Composition Engine Part 2

It's a movie of these effects.

Is there any way with OS 4.1 to start doing real-time screen captures? For example, to create a demo video of the compositing engine without having to resort to a video camera?

The videos on youtube are good, but the quality is horrible.

If someone is keen I am willing to sponsor a project.

Yes I've heard a couple of people asking for this, it's a good idea.

Rude!

There is nothing different in 4.1 in this respect. The compositing engine works on the graphics card only, you cannot use it to access main memory.

One of the features we're planning for and update is support for PCI GART on Radeons. That allows you to map part of the system memory into the Radeon's address space using DMA. That feature might make capturing video feasible. It is also needed to get decent OpenGL performance.

EDIT: What you could do with the compositing engine is make a scaled copy of the screen (say, scale 1280x1024 to 640x480) so that the bandwidth requirement to transfer the frame aren't that big anymore, but that is the limit really.
