Software News   Software News : 'Desktop to Front' for OS4
   posted by RacerX on 8-Dec-2008 3:53:26 (3943 reads)
There are a set of scripts on OS4 Depot here: WB2Front which bring a poor man's 'Desktop to Front' function to OS4.

The scripts also work with OS3.

Dare I ask what this does that RAmiga-N does not?

RAmiga-M just cycles screens, RAmiga-N brings workbench to the front.

I've just tried this program. It brings the workbench WINDOW to the front, not the Workbench Screen. I guess so you can access your disk icons and app icons, even if they were hidden by something else.

It's usefull for those of us who run applications (IBrowse, YAM, etc...) from the Workbench screen instead of on their own screens.

@RacerX

I have the lastest OS4 and an AmigaOne. Was reading this in iBrowse and reached down, pressed RAmiga, then "n" and got a new iBrowse window.

Said, "Bah!", dismissed that new window, clicked in the background, pressed RAmiga, then "n" and ..... nothing happened.

I _ do _ not _ know _ WHAT you all are talking about.

@ggw

It didn't work because it's the left amiga key and not the right. I.e. LAmiga + N (WB screen to front) and LAmiga + M (switch screen). Right amiga key is used for menu shortcuts.

Hmmm... If my Workbench window is a backdrop window, where do all the open windows go, and how do I get them back?

No, I haven't read the docs in the archive, but I'll give it a shot when I go home - it's something that I'd actually like to have!

One of the scripts will change your Workbench from backdrop to a window, and bring it to the front. All your open windows will still be there, just under the Workbench window. Running this script again puts your Workbench back to a backdrop (and behind your other windows).

The other 2 scripts are for people who normally keep their Workbench as a window. One of them brings the Workbench window to the front and activates it, the other puts the Workbench window to the back.

The readme even states that it was tested on OS 3.0.

Well, either the testers didn't report their results or you didn't read the reports. The scripts cannot work on OS 3.0 because the Workbench ARexx port only exists in OS 3.5 and above.

Bye,
Thomas

Maybe it was a typo and they intended to type OS 3.9 .

My bad. My tester was using 3.5 and 3.9, and I presumed it would work back to 3.0. I'll change the docs in the next release (if there is one).
