Software News   Software News : Short Video of C64 Forever Beta Released
posted by mcb on 11-Jan-2009 6:38:56 (3988 reads)
The Lisbon meetup last week was very enjoyable. Special thanks to Jorge, Marco, Pedro and Tiago for their warm hospitality.

A short video of the C64 Forever beta is available at www.c64forever.com/facebook/.

It illustrates new features like RP2 Manager (to scan media for games, etc., also to be released in Amiga Forever), and integration of Amiga and 8-bit sessions running side by side.

As much as I like their ideas and everything it is very easy to get 12 GB of the entire C64 software ever made into existence in download. Personally C64Forever does not do it for me, not for that concept but for the mere fact I own the REAL deal and I prefer to use the REAL deal. I hook my C64 on my TV to play them and that is that, no emulator for me in this regard. The only time I ever use the emulator like the Amiga is to test the game I want and BANG transfer it to the real deal.

Great for you ... but a lot of people don't have the real deal and this is a very good alternative to get to know C64.

But do you have a SuperCPU (20MHz 6502) and a REU with 4MB ram?

I know at least one game that needs that set-up to play as it was designed for it, and getting that kit now for your real C64/C128 is not an easy task. I believe the game also came on 1581 floppies, which made it a very specialist title.

Of course, under emulation, all of this is very possible, as you just need to click a few options and away you go.

if they are not making the emulator all this is just yet another frontend.... sorry to say it but you get winvice, frondends and all the games/demos for free. anyway the best is to run these games/demos on the real thing.

Wow - does it emulate all of this too? I want it. I believe the game is Metal Dust.

HOLD ON A SECOND! Are you telling me that C64forever ACTUALLY emulates the SuperCPU and I can play that rare game after all??! = Metal Dust.

At last year's CommVEx, Michael of Cloanto also said there would be video of CBM notables on the DVD.

If there is no SuperCPU emulation it doesn't standout and VICE is probably the best C64 emulator into existence. Then this project makes it nothing special, unless it have something that no emulators out there have like SuperCPU emulation then it is not worth it.

Does it also emulates the Amiga? I can only look at the video, no sound right now. If so, why the name 64?

C64 Forever is to Vice what Amiga Forever is to WinUAE. I believe it will be a complete C64 presevation emulation and support package, much like Amiga Forever is for the Amiga platform. I think it is based on Vice engine and will contain a modified version of Retro Platform player introduced in Amiga Forever 2008. This will enable simple 1-click playing of all C64 games?

I think it will be very popular. When you condider how many 100,000's of CD64 DTV joysticks sold, which included a mere 30 games, it shows there is a wider market for C64 products. I think Cloanto are hoping that a few of the PC using, ex C64 owners, will be drawn to the easy access and play of 1000's of C64 games using C64 Forever.
