The new AROS distribution Icaros Desktop, formerly known as VmwAROS, is now available for download. It has got many enhancements over the previous versions, including the OWB web browser, better Amiga emulation performances, a real PDF reader and many, many more. Why isn't SabreMSN v0.42 being used? It has white backgrounds by default for AROS.

I tried the VMWare edition and this works well!
Fast enough for me on my system. Even SabreMSN loaded, but maybe I missed something!
Well done!

I found out that win32 vmwAROS live version was already very usable for many things.

(for example on workstations where one do not have local admin rights)

Looking forward to try these latest productions as well....

Hi KimmoK, Icaros Desktop is the heir of VmwAROS and keeps all its features. So you will find the QEMU option integrated in Live! version.

And, to show that I keep in mind what I promise... just look in the readme.txt file

AROS team should have a lot of more Videos / PDFs describing and educating us on their technology. From Architecture right through to design. Much like the Java VM tutorials and videos describes how the Java VM works.

I tried to install this live version on my HD but is doesn't boot. I installed it to the second HD with AROSinstaller from Tools drawer. Grub and Linux is on the first HD. Do anybody know what's needed in menu.lst and any other place ? Aros-exec is still down.

Why there's not a CD image but DVD image only ?

Why these new features in Icaros/VmwAros are not added into other nightly build versions ?

Hi! Please read carefully chapter 2 and 3 of the Icaros Desktop PDF manual. You will find out why, most probably, your installation of Icaros is not working. Please install on Master 0, in a blank unpartitioned space left by your existing OSes.

There isn't a CD version of Icaros because there is too much software, and a CD is not enough.

There aren't Icaros features in AROS nightlies, because if there were, I didn't need to do Icaros Desktop instead.

What kind of hardware are you trying to boot it on?
Which brand of chipset does your PC have?

Does it support SUN's VirtualBox?

DVD boots fine but I can't get it to install to harddrive properly. The installer copies the C, Classes, Devs, Fonts, Libs, Locale, Prefs, Rexxc, S, Storage and System dirs to the Aros: partition then claims it has successfully installed Aros! It doesn't copy anything else not even the Extras to the Work: partition. I think maybe some error flashes up really quick during the install that I don't see it. I've tried two different HDDs and re-burnt the iso but get same results every time. My machine is an AMD Athlon64 3200.

Have you choosen to actually install them? There are two checkbox to sign, in order to do so. Please read chapter 3 of the Icaros manual.

Yes, I followed the instructions in the manual (I know it actually makes a change for some one to do that ). The installer doesn't even copy GRUB to the harddrive or the icon for the system drawer so it must be hitting a problem but it flashes by so quick I don't see what it is.
My harddrive is the first device (set as master) on the primary IDE port. As per the manual I wiped it and set up DH0 as FFS and DH1 as SFS. I then checked all the boxes on all options after that. Set my language and locale options. The installer then copies the 11 dirs I mentioned before and that's it. Obviously it won't boot because there's a load of files missing. I tried manually copying all the files from the DVD to the harddrive but that didn't work, I assume because the installation needs to be configured in some way.
Any help would be gratefully received.

I think that not because VmWare is one program from Windows although I remember that I think there is a Linux version of this program, and every program has own format, sorry this is as our UAE with the hard disk and floppies format.

I'm posting this using OWB on Icaros Desktop and VMware Player. I have a Pentium 4 3,2 GHz and it's pretty slow but it works!

I've also got it to work in Sun's VirtualBox but VMware Player feels a bit faster.

I'm really tempted to try a real installation to see how fast it is.

I don't still understand why there have to be 3 different AROS branches (including Anubis). Why not concentrating on one branch only ?

-NIghtys are for developers and hardcore AROS users.
- Icaros is for ordinary users (it's a distro) You can update a nighty into it when ever you feel to at your own risk.
