I had a play with the vmware version of Icaros Desktop Yesterday but even after downloading and applying the CD updates I could not get sound working.

So I have now installed virtualbox and I am in the process of downloading the dvd live image and will give that a try as AROS looks quite nice from yesterdays play around even if I did not get working sound.

Installed IcAROS 1.1.3 (including dev tools) on my Virtualbox's harddisk and posting from AROS's OWB. AC97 AHI (for sound) and NIC (for network) works on VirtualBox.

Currently playing with AROS's dev tools.

@Hammer
You beat me to it I am still installing AROS as I run out of free diskspace on my laptop and had to clear more space before I could finish my install :)

So far I am impressed the installer is easy to use and looks very professional.

You aren't the kind of guy who carefully read the manuals, are you?

Jokes apart, you won't get sound under VMware until someone will port a proper driver for AHI. So there are only two options to get sound from AROS: either use VirtualBox or Qemu, or a real computer with a supported sound card.

Well I did read the manual and as vmware is emulating a Soundblaster live card I made the mistake of expecting it to work ;) (probably the wrong type of soundblaster live as I know there are a lot of different versions) I only tried it under vmware as I already have the player installed for use with the rockbox vmware development environment.

I now have it up and working with virtual box with working sound and USB but no networking yet. I have probably just selected the wrong version of the e1000 network card to emulate so I am sure I will get it working when I select the right card and driver under AROS.

@Dwyloc
For network, I use VirtualBox's PCnet-FAST III (which is bridged adapter with Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN).

Now posting from AROS

I think its ime to take a break and go outside for a bit

My next AROS chalange will be setting up 68k emulation with my AmigaForever CD.

It will also be fun to give the sam port a try on my sam440ep dual booting with OS4.1 at some point in the future.

@Hammer
Thanks for the help.

One thing that wasn't mentioned in the Icaros 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 release notes that might be of interest is that there were important fixes to the ATA driver and the installation tools. So if earlier AROS versions wouldn't boot or wouldn't install on your PC the last time you tried it, it's worth trying it again now.

AFAIK VMware doesn't emulate a SB live, but a ES137x sound chip which is not supported by AROS version of AHI (there are two drivers available for AmigaOS and MorphOS, both closed source, and none of the people I've contacted so far ported it to AROS). There is even a bounty already set up.

So no, there's no sound in VMware.

Anyway, I'm happy Icaros is working for you. Try it native when you can, is much more fast.

@paolone

Any plans to support Intel HDA and Intel Wifi i.e. new bounties?

I'd need some feedback from people using VirtualBox. It's the first time I try to release a Virtual Appliance, so please download this:

Icaros Desktop VE 1.1.3 Virtual Appliance for VirtualBos and others

And tell me if it works correctly for you. You'd need VirtualBox version 3.x or better. Thank you

You can set up a bounty at Power2People as you wish. Just start it, and maybe some other will donate.

@paolone

Well as I am posting this from an install of your Icaros Desktop VirtualBox image under the Vista 64-bit Ultimate edition it looks like your virtual Appliance works nicley.
