News   News : Aspire in 4D from DiscreetFX!
   posted by DiscreetFX on 2-Nov-2009 22:13:43 (6255 reads)
Chicago, Illinois – November 2nd, 2009

For Immediate Release

DiscreetFX & Acer are teaming up to bring you special pricing on Aladdin 4D. Purchase a dual booting Aspire One netbook between now and November 30th, 2009 and receive a discount on Aladdin 4D 5.0. The Aspire One running Google's Android OS is the first netbook that boots Android by default in 14 seconds. While this bootup is not as fast as Amiga OS 4.1 or MorphOS it is still an impressive feat. Customers have almost immediate access to Firefox, their e-mail and most other internet functions. Applications can also be purchased from the Android Store. Almost 10,000 applications are already available. Windows XP is also included and can be switched to with one click in Android. With this version of the Aspire One, XP becomes a guest operating system.

Just as owning a true IBM PC was no longer required in the 1990's since compatibility was achieved from clone makers such as DELL, Acer, Gateway, etc. Now Windows compatibility can be achieved by dual booting or even just running a Virtual Machine (VMWare) or the Windows API (CrossOver/Wine). DiscreetFX wishes to encourage this and thus is doing a special promotion with Acer. Only customers buying the Aspire One that runs Android will be eligible for a discount. After you purchase the netbook from your favorite retailer such as Amazon, send us a copy of your receipt and we will send you a Paypal invoice for a discounted price on Aladdin 4D 5.0. After you pay this invoice you will receive an e-mail with a link to download Aladdin 4D instantly with PDF manual.

You will also get a included upgrade coupon for a discount to the upcoming Aladdin 4D 6.0 on the platform of your choice. Sadly we are no longer offering free upgrades to 6.0. Aladdin 4D is a perfect 3D animation package for beginners or someone just getting started in animation software. Aladdin 4D renders almost instantly on the Acer Aspire One. Since Android is a version of Linux we are exploring adding support for it with the Linux version of Aladdin 4D 6.0. In order to run Aladdin 4D 5.0 with your Aspire One you will need to own a copy of Amiga Forever 2009 or WinUAE. If you don't already own this fantastic virtual machine please purchase via the link below. Since you will be running AmigaOS on your Aspire One we recommend buying the ruby red model. The Aspire One comes in black, blue and ruby red.

Acer stated the majority of Acer netbooks will offer Android in the future, Acer believes Android “will contribute significantly to the worldwide netbook market growth.”

Amiga Forever 2009

Aspire One

Best regards

@retro

We have never supported or released any products that use AA or AA2.

I'm wondering how far you'll go to sell your oldies...

What does Aspire/Android have to do with the Amiga ? (not that I have anything against it, I'm just wondering...)

@Leo

The Aspire One is a light portable netbook that we use to run Amiga Forever 2009 and Aladdin 4D. We thought others might enjoy knowing this fact. Since Aladdin 4D is in active development, screen shot via link below.

http://aladdin4d.blogspot.com/2009/10/mac-os-x-version-of-aladdin-4d.html

I would not call it an oldie. We have done an extensive rewrite of the code to make it PowerPC for Amiga OS 4.x and MorphOS and multi platform. The release is taking longer than expected but that is because the source code was not as portable as we were led to believe.

@Gebrochen

We want Aladdin 4D shipping as much as or more than you do. We have no published release date though. The good news is the source code has been rewritten to be muti-platform friendly so once versions of Aladdin 4D start coming out you will see each version come out at a faster pace.

Im a big fan of the Acer Aspire One series, i currently use a slightly modified A110L (the original bottom of the range version that came with 512mb, an 8gb SSD and linux) i have upgraded the ram to 1.5gb and fitted a 30gb hard disk out of an ipod and its been running well for a year so far with no problems running windows 7 (first the beta now the RC) its a very solid little computer and i will be buying another some time and probably one running android. I have used a few other models and to me they are much more usable and feel more solid than any eeepc i have tried and very good value for money.

@DiscreetFX

good news !

The site says that Mac OSX is porting the quickest due to its developer tools.

What exactly are these tools that speed up porting ? Knowing where Amigas tools are failing could help with other ports.

cheeers

It sounds very exciting, but from how the 'release' is written, I'm left wondering if Acer truly knows anything about this 'teaming up', or is it a one sided thing where DiscreetFX likes the Acer product and has decided to offer a discount to anyone else who happens to purchase one?

Acer is aware of the promotion, in fact they are very happy for any new angle to sell more product. The netbook market is very cut throat and challenging.

What is it that XCode has that other IDEs don't which is so useful? I guess that we should really be asking your developers this question, but we don't know if they even have an account here.

Is there somewhere we can see some samples of the type of renders that Aladin 4D 5 is capable of ?

Thanks, John

Just for the record, OS4.1 on my SAM boots into Workbench in about 39 seconds. Yes I have a rather slow 2.5" harddisk but I doubt I could ever get under 14 seconds.

FYI

Yesterday in Chicago I was rendering a Aladdin 4D animation and our Aspire One went into standby mode because it's battery was drained. It was on frame 300 out of 1000 frames and they were being saved to the Virtual Amiga's RAM disk. Nine hours later I arrived home and plugged the netbook in. It booted right back to the Amiga Forever 2009 session running Aladdin 4D and finished rendering the rest of the frames!

Very nice Virtual Amiga!

Are you planning an Aros version of Aladdin 4D? Would you consider bundling it with Aros-powered netbooks once they hit the market? We're working on the A1600 , which has similar specifications to the Aspire, but will cost less and run Icaros Portable (Aros) and Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Linux). Thanks to Aros' built-in emulation, 68k Amiga applications like Aladdin 4D should run in an Aros window as if they were native.

The A1600 comes in red, white, black, yellow and metallic pink, and personally I think they look more attractive than any other netbooks on the market. It'll be the first portable computer package designed specifically for the Amiga market.

We are absolutely planning an AROS version of Aladdin 4D. That has been the plan from the beginning.

http://aladdin4d.blogspot.com/2007/12/offical-press-release-detailing-aladdin.html

When is the A1600 shipping?

The A1600 is available now, but Aros support for the Intel graphics chipset, WIFI and a few other things are still in development or haven't started yet. Once it's all done, Aros will work perfectly on just about any Atom-based netbook. These are just unbranded OEM netbooks that we can stick our own badge on and market ourselves under our own name. Like any pipedream project though, we need funding to get it off the ground. A few of us are field-testing them while the remaining drivers are written. I'll post a photo of Cammy's red model since she doesn't post here anymore. Hopefully we'll get some better photos of some other models over the next month or so.
