| Hi,
Great news - sort of.
The file is over 80Mb in size and no doubt mainly repeated material from the previous SDK. This was what happened the last time, I wasted hours downloading the file to find most of it identical.
Can Hyperion PLEASE release a SMALLER file that contains just the newer material.
Thanks to BT discrimination against rural areas in the UK I am unable to have a fast broadband connection and unlikely ever to be able to. This is NOT my choice belive me. I do not even have the option to pay more for a fsater connection, it is limited by my BT line which BT do feck all about.
So for those of us stuck with slow connections can the SDKs be released as Updates as well as full packages. It is unacceptable to have to download the entire SDK every time a few changes are made. What is wrong with releasing UPDATES with a proper installer to ensure the update is correctly installed.
I am not willing to download tens of MB of repeated material, identical to what is already there. Especially if the download is as badly done as the OS4.1 update and extra garbage is tagged onto the end of it if you use Ibrowse
Bill.
Waiting for an UPDATE not an entire SDK replacement. |

I understand your problem but you must understand that Hyperion is working with limited resources. If I was in their shoes I would do the exact same thing - only provide a full download. Writing installers is a PITA and writing one to update a prior installation for a small number of users would be an even bigger PITA. Their time is better spent updating OS4.x.
It would be cheaper/easier for them and/or third parties to provide the SDK on CD on request. Microsoft does this and charges a very nominal fee for shipping. |

Developers should consider the poor sods that have to download the files. You obviously have connections fast enough for it not to bother you, but for me it takes ages to download files that size.
I had to download the OS4 update 1, twice and it took me all evening only to find the files were corrupt each time because Hyperion have a disriminatory thing about IBrowse and (deliberately ?) corrupted the file when downloading wth IB.
Last time someone sent me a CD with the SDK on it but the CD was dodgy and I could not read it, so I still had to download the file at the library. Their connection is slightly faster than mine, but even then it took all my online time limit to get it.
I do not see what the problem is with issuing only the new files. Why insist people download huge amounts of files that have not changed from the ones you already have (which WAS exactly the case with the last SDK release), it does not make sense. Surely AmiUpdate could be used for this so people can just download what they need and no more.
This "download the lot or none" attitude is just a selfish policy by those *fortunate* and *priviledged* enough to have fast connections yet have a total disregard for and blatant discrimination against those of us unable to get reasonable access speeds.
An update shopuld be exactly that, an update not a complete replacement.

Its not like there comes a new SDK release once in a month. Dont you have friends or someone at work that can DL for you. Someone could send a cd/usb stick and post it. Its not Hyperion's fault you have a slow broadband.
An SDK update is not just as an small apps update with 1-20 files. Even on install it says that its not recommended to install over and old SDK installation. Last edited by Kicko on 04-Mar-2010 at 04:30 PM.

| i pity you BillE for your internet connection. Must be hard living at a place with such rotten connection.
I hope you get a connection on par with year 2000 standards at least before this decade is over.
Don't loose hope.

It certainly is easy to forget about non-broadband users once you get used to broadband. Do you know of any tool that could be used to create an update that patches the old archive?
How rural are you? It may be possible to pool together with neighbours (assuming nice neighbours) to share a satellite broadband connection. A wok antenna would be a cheap method of sharing a network over longer line of site links. Depending on where you are, you might even be able to link in to a neighbouring city's wireless network. Setting up something like this takes some effort, but it's worth thinking about.

| Bill -
In the past I have had to order install CDs when I have been on dial-up (could not afford high-speed). I have been in your situation.
If you like I can burn an ISO for you and pop it in the mail. Just send me your mailing address by PM.
Cheers! |
