News   News : IMICA Atom becomes Aros fully native and celebrates in Silence
posted by clusteruk on 21-May-2010 20:05:15 (7457 reads)
The journey that started 18 months ago to create a next generation Amiga on commodity hardware has now reached its first major milestone by becoming a completely driver native Aros system powered by the energy efficient Intel Atom processor. This has been achieved with the supply of hardware and in some cases financial rewards. The plan with the following steps has been to create a base reference platform for Aros and the Amiga community to build on and support.

Step 1: Network driver development by Nick “Kalamatee” Andrews, free to all.
Step 2: HDAudio by Davy Wentzler owned by Cluster UK ltd, free to end users.
Step 3: Catweasel driver development for Aros by Ian Gledhill, free to all.
Step 4: Intel GMA device developed by Michal Schulz and again free to all.

This work would not have been possible without the amazing team of developers working on Aros whose names are long and well respected but room does not allow all their names to appear. Please visit Aros.org for more details. Also a notable mention must go to Paolo Besser and the IcAros distribution that is supplied with all iMica systems.
In between this work other developments have been supported, more news on these later. However, we have also been experimenting with hardware configurations for the best type of iMica system, but it has become clear that one thing was important to all; it must be SILENT.

So now we announce the final iMica Atom system that we believe will achieve all the needs of the Amiga and Aros fan using low cost commodity hardware in a small and SILENT package.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvXhCYdc3aM

This unit is not only power efficient and low cost, but can also be mounted behind the monitor to create a space efficient working area and no wires in front of the monitor when using a wireless keyboard and mouse. However, with its great looks and slim design it is doubtful you will want to hide it away.
This is not the end, this is just Stage 1.

Stage 2, optional case upgrade to hold, PCI Catweasel MK4, Slim DVD and Amiga/Mac/PC compatible floppy disk drive unit. This will be available to all iMica Atom customers.

Stage 3, Well we will tell you about that when we have something to show, but it will make the investment in the iMica Atom system a good investment, and might just inspire old Amiga users to get really excited about next generation Amiga’s including those with other Amiga OS flavours.

My thanks to all of the Aros and Amiga developers who have supported me over the last 18 months.

Kudos to you and everyone involved with AROS development. AROS has made significant progress over the last couple years.

Has there ever been any dialog between Hyperion and the AROS camp? It's difficult for me to fathom why these two groups aren't cooperating.

So many reasons, the most reasonable being:
AmigaOS is closed source and Hyperion wish that it remains so.
Integrating components of AROS which are open source within AmigaOS would likely require AmigaOS to be fully open sourced as well due to GPL restrictions.
AmigaOS, from the classic days, likely contains IP from other individuals and companies, so it could probably never be open sourced anyway.
Oh well, competition is always good. It keeps everyone on their toes.

AROS continues to go from strength to strength and basing a computer solely around AROS shows that it is ready to become a serious contender in the market space.

Congratulations Stephen, on this milestone. You da man!!!
This Imica looks absolutely gorgeous.
I love how you can tuck it away behind the monitor.
I wish I had known about it before. I'll definitely be talking to people about this.
So, do you intend to boot AROS off USB, or off an SD Card, or CF reader?

I just had a crazy thought, does it have composite out? You could tuck it behind a classic monitor and just about believe you've upgraded your classic Amiga.
It's soooo small you could just about tuck it inside a broken classic!!!

FYI: AROS is licensed under AROS Public License, not GPL. APL allows integration with prioprietary systems without the need of said system to become open source. We do have a small number of LGPL components (AHI and AROSTCP afaik), but LGPL does not require open sourcing the prioprietary systems likes GPL does.

Apart from the fact that not everything that it's open source is GPLed, as in this case you would be right. OSX uses open source parts, MorphOS itself uses parts of AROS, so there's actually no problem using those parts and close them or even keep them open while rest remain closed.

@All

Thanks for great and supportive comments, this has been a learning journey but the key thing has become SILENCE, and NATIVE.

I am designing a riser to put the top and bottom to fit a Catweasel, DVD, floppy drive but need to check costing.

This will be again be silent, if you buy the SSD drive for it, but also it is 12v, can be fitted into a car

Also if you have the Catweasel you can use a joystick, mouse and Amiga keyboard.

All in all a nice little computer.

However, if you want an Aros powerhouse, then AresOne will be your machine. Between the two of us I believe the choices are there.
