Software News   Software News : NTP Commander - open souce
posted by Prober on 24-Jun-2010 1:07:51 (4373 reads)
I have successfully contacted Patrick Sucansky, an author of the file manager NTP Commander (Norton Commander clone for the Amiga). He agreed to release it for free and also made available the source code for the never released version 2.2 (including his DICE development environment). NTP Commander is now released as open source.

I didn't check the binary, but the source archive does not come with any type of license ("open source" is not a license). Please add a license to this archive, preferably something well known like GPL oder new-style BSD - otherwise the usefullness of this release is somewhat limited.

And could you please confirm that we can upload this to Aminet aswell?

Good news. I wonder if there is anything useful there for the Opus-like Filer project?

Even DiskMaster v1.3 for wb1.3 is way ahead of this thing, not to mention DOpus. So, what's the point?

There must be a few of these Norton clones around,. This looks like Midnight Commander (MC) used in Linux. Well I still use it from my PegXMac installation.

But, I do agree, why bother not now but in the first place? It just looks like a DOS program, not really suited to the Amiga. Having said that I've never tried it either. It may look old but use the mouse. Unlike MC.

NTP has the same keyboard shortcuts as NC, so if you know NC well you will work as fast in NTP. I think author got sued by those who made NC?

Personally I think DOpus is just weird (and now I am not talking of v 5+).

It might look oldschool but thats just the way NC and MC looks like, IMHO nothing wrong there.

Would be nice if you would be able to run NTP in a window over workbench, as for the os4 port, the 68k version runs fine as is.

@ Hypex,

I always try the mouse in MC. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. And, yes, this is in a command-line window.

of course there is nothing wrong about the look etc. just it's the ms-dos way, while ''we'' in amiga
have better ways and programms for this kind of stuff.
cli-mate rules!

Is anyone able to compile these source files? Just for the classic Amiga, not for AmigaOS 4, MorphOS, AROS. I would like to try the latest version of NTP Commander, because I have only version 1.1.
