Software News   Software News : PyGame ported to AmigaOS 4.x!
posted by spotUP on 18-Aug-2010 17:03:50 (7628 reads)
After one late evening and half a day it's done!

... is ported to AmigaOS4. This opens up the doors for a flood of new game/demo/app ports.
The first decent game that is ported is called Mobius Skies - a very nice horizontal shmup.

Download PyGame here!
Download Mobius Skies http://www.os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=game/shmup/mobiusskies.lha

The shared object of SDL, SDL_Mixerl, SDL_Image etc are needed, they are all available on os4depot.
Have fun!

Nice work spotUP! If more of us had your knack for getting these things compiled, we'd be laughing

you know, adapting a python game to run under AmigaOS 4 is often so easy it's silly!
All you guys that wanted to try porting, this is your chanse, way easier than compiling other games.
It's often just about packaging them together and adding a small script and an icon.

Some games takes some work, but for example, Mobius Skies, worked perfectly on the first try.
All i did was from shell:

python the_game_script.py

And it worked. After that i added an icon, a start script and our intro etc... all in all, it took me about 10 minutes.

Great work!

With Python built-in to the Amiga these days, I was hoping to see more people take notice. Projects like Blender and now PyGame certainly show off what Python can accomplish.

Fantastic work. Mobius Skies works fine after I installed the PyGame and then libSDL_ttf.so
Be aware if you don't have the TTF library installed, it will crashed.
After creating 400x300 screenmode, the game is perfectly playable on AmigaOS 4 in fullscreen:

This is great! I love python, and I'm looking forward to playing around with this when I hopefully get a Sam460 soon.

Is numpy also available?

no, numpy isn't available.

i'll take this opporturnity to request some missing libs that i need and pray that ssolie reads it.

_ctypes, numpy, json, numeric, and pyode.

i have built the opengl module without errors, but when i try to run an opengl game it complains of the missing _ctypes.

so on the top of my wish list is _ctypes which i believe will need cross compiling, alternatively a bigger brain than mine.

edit: i am giving pyode a go myself now.

@ SpotUp

Well done. Again, another one to the collection. :D haha.

General commentary :
Easy for you correct.

I find driving manual easy and a lot of fun, and find automatic cars boring to drive and talentless.

But not everyone is in the same mindset, and so we all have different talents and interests.

So I think what Im trying to say is, for those that want to learn coding, scripting, or simply already have the know how and like it, should also be doing ports, etc for the Amiga community, instead of just sitting on their rear ends, doing nothing, and letting the friedens take care of it, or someone like this guy here, SpotUp.

And this is where you are a good amigan, you are actually utilising your talents wisely. Sure, ok, there'll be some coders out there that dont have an OS4 system, etc, etc, well, they could always buy one!

Cheers
End of General Commentary.

Cheers

Right, Python games have nothing to do on os4depot. Do we put DOS games that run on DosBox or ScummVM ? The only reason I see would be the game needs changes. But I would prefer to focus only on good games (that sounds obvious, I know) and provide a patch to the game creators.

spotUP: Good work, mate ! That was a fast and furious run !
