posted by guruman on 10-Oct-2010 12:34:00 (3915 reads)
The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 2.6 introducing support of Power Mac G4 systems. In addition to the extended hardware support, existing users will benefit from various bug fixes and a few new features. For an overview of the included changes, please read our release notes.

We strongly urge owners of Power Mac computers to carefully read our installation and troubleshoot guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 2.6 is available for download in our files section.

I have always been interested in MorphOS. My question is what are they planning on doing about the finite number of Power PC hardware? As far as I know there isn't anyone producing Power PC desktop or laptop hardware. So, while the old Apple hardware is getting easy to find and cheaper on ebay this is rather a rather a dead end. They are not going x86 or Arm, so where is this platform going?

Like DFergATL mentioned, it's a matter of time - until no modern PowerPC Hardware will be available.

It would be good to know, where MorphOS is going...

I would prefer the ARM-Way.

@ DFergATL

It is not decided yet what comes after support for existing Apple ppc hardware. Next goals are support for Apple laptops and G5 computers. For the next couple of years these computers will easily be available through the varous 2nd hand marktets. The faster G4 and G5 provide some useful cpu power (not as much as current x86, but enough to be pretty useful)
In, say, 5 years time of course the situation may significantly change. The hardwrae gets older and teh cpu power gap to then current x86 gets wider. Either MorphOS will do an ISA switch (be it ARM or x86) then or maybe new ppc hardware hit the market (not too likely, but also possible).
The whole idea about MorphOS is not so much about promises what will be one day, but the option to use it now. And *now* it suports quite some hardware that is easily obtainable and has enough cpu power for a lot of things. And I am pretty convinced the MorphSO story will continue beyond Apple ppc hardware. But this of course depends also in how much faith current users have in the OS today.

I think it's not because the OS uses old hardware, the OS can't evolve. Going G4 Mac looks like the easiest and fastest way to expand userbase and to sell licences.

Hardware supply isn't a problem anymore and I suppose they have time now to look in to other things ( if that is what they want, I have no idea ).

And if you interested In MorphOS ... would you rather try it out on 100$ hardware or on 1000$ hardware ?

I couldn't resist to try to install it on PearPC emulation.
Of course, it didn't work, but the idea was too appealing :)
Any plans from the MorphOS people on that topic?

@ Zylesea

Thanks for the info. I will probably wait until G5 and some laptop support before I take the dive in.

I've had an A1XE for years, now, yet I've always fancied trying MOS.

I've downloaded and installed it on my 800MHz G4 PowerMac, on which I now triple boot -OSX, MOS2.6 and Yellow Dog Linux.

I have to say, on first impressions, I'm very impressed. It comes over as being very smart and professional looking, snappy, even on 800MHz.

Incidentally, the company who do Yellow Dog support not only the PS3 (well, they did, anyway), but also offer a setup on an IBM Power Workstation. Don't ask which machine, exactly, I can't remember, but there's also a possible expansion route for MOS (OS4, too, really)
