Software News   Software News : REBOL 3 Released for AmigaOS
   posted by ssolie on 25-Oct-2010 18:56:40 (8092 reads)
REBOL 3 has just been released for the AmigaOS 4.1 and can be downloaded from the alpha downloads section.

REBOL 3 is currently in alpha and so is the Amiga version. Please read the documentation on the REBOL site for more information.

For those without AmigaOS you can also try REBOL 3 on a variety of other platforms or even directly on the web.

Note that a Host-Kit for REBOL 3 is still in development which will greatly extend what can be done with REBOL on the Amiga so stay tuned.

If you're using OWB click the link with middle mouse button and select "Download linked file" from the popup menu. (On the download page.)

After downloading you don't have to unpack it or anything. Just rename it to r3 and copy to C:.

Nice news.

@ssolie
I assume this is just the Core, and doesn't include View (for graphics/gui) or anything fancy like that? Do you know if that is likely to come later? (As I recall, View was still being finalised for R3 anyway?)

@ChrisH
REBOL 3 is a different animal from previous incarnations. Components like View do not need to be implemented by REBOL Technologies themselves. Once the host-kit is completed things may become more obvious.

@ssolie

Does that mean that the UI can be adjusted to the OS4.1 look?

I'm assuming that networking works, so, when you start R3, you will get a console, where you have access to all core functions.

Then you can try the chat program. It's a bit difficult to use, since it's console only, but it's possible to get used to it. First type 'chat', then type 'help', for usage. If it doesn't open a webbrowser, the help is here:

http://www.rebol.com/r3/devbase/index.html

R3 will definitely become more fun for you, when the View engine is added, but there is already a lot of things available.

So, get started building those 5k webservers.

Just ask any questions, and I'll try to answer them.

Thanks.

I hope Steve Solie doesn't mind that I answer:

Yes, it can be made to look like OS4, but since R3 has its own GUI engine, it won't rely on Reaction or MUI. It will also be cross-platform, so it will eventually work immediately in Windows, OSX, Linux and AmigaOS.

There are two parts: The View engine, which is basically a system to handle windows, bitmaps, fonts, graphical object blocks (GOBs) and user input events. It uses the AGG rasterizer, which works well for our needs.

The GUI is a separate part and is a REBOL based implementation on top of View to create faces (widgets) that can be arranged, and resized through simple REBOL code.

The advantage in this separation is that you can replace the GUI system with one that might be oriented towards games or multimedia appliances.

This GUI system is mostly meant for large business apps, but it should cover most needs required by general users.

So to make it look like OS4, you need to create a skin for it, so each style (fields, texts, lists, tab-panels, etc.) would be adapted to the OS4 look. How skinning will be done, will be determined when the GUI system is stable.

To take advantage of Amiga UI libraries like Reaction or MUI directly would require an extension to couple R3 with those UI libraries. You would be free to build such an extension now, if you wish.

You can also replace the View system with a different component, and we already have a user leveraging his knowledge on OpenGL to couple that with REBOL.

Yes this is good and small as well! But is it too much to ask to actually have the name of the application in the filename?

Right now I can't tell the difference between Rebol and FryingPan. They use the same type of cryptic names. And I wonder what happens when they release a second program?

I don't mind at all. I'm still learning REBOL myself.

Sure, but SOMEONE still needs to port View/etc to OS4. Which from your answer I assume has not happened yet (fair enough).
