Good to see an update. Apart from the prefs program is there any additional benefits to using these datatypes over those that come with OS4.1 update 2?

@Templario

AFAIK it is the same author (and therefore the same code) as in the OS4 datatypes.

Unless of course he managed to do some Altivec tweaks to this particular update!

@Deniil715

That was pretty much the case in the past, but not anymore. For various reasons I have decided no longer to contribute the new features and changes from the WarpDTs into the OS4 supplied datatypes.

There is probably not a lot of difference in speed at this moment in time, but due to changes in the OS4 datatypes the WarpDTs may be a little faster in some situations, and of course I am always looking at ways to improve the WarpDT speed. The bigger differences are that the WarpDTs come with PCX and PSD too and with prefs options as previously mentioned. Hopefully at least one new addition in the near future (I wrote a working JPEG2000 datatype 6 years ago using the Jasper toolkit, but it was embarrassingly slow so was never released - I shall be having a look at using openjpeg instead). Plus currently WarpJPEG and WarpPNG feature newer versions of the jpeglib, libpng and zlib, which themselves bring fixes and new features.

@Futaura

I used WarpDT on OS3/WOS and liked the speed a lot.
But for two reasons I think I will stick to the OS4 datatypes for now:
1. I use PicShow to view pictures and it is using it's own jpeg decoder (so I woulnd't gain anything there).
2. I would like a bigger incentive to switch in general, such as Altivec acceleration. So whenever you come across such a lib, or manage to optimize it yourself....

Anyway, thanks for the update.

Nice to see updates to this little gem. Maybe it's time to dig out my
3.x system again...

@ Futaura

I don't want to sound rude and I respect your decision,
but I'm just curious to know why you decided to no longer contribute to the supplied OS4 datatypes,
I think that's a shame, really.

@virgolamobile

It would be inappropriate/unprofessional to discuss the reasons publically. I am still happy to update the OS4 datatypes as and when necessary, but they won't be containing all the new stuff that goes into improving the WarpDTs.

The WarpDTs may have been neglected by me in recent years (partly because it took me a while to move my development stuff from my A1200 to my A1XE, but I now I can build all WarpDT versions on my A1XE which helps a lot), but I hope to work on them more in the future. I released a new WarpTIFF today, which took quite a while as it was a long time since I last updated that one, and libtiff is not so easy to update especially when I've modified various parts of it - but it's working better and ever now and can read many more TIFF files than before.
