Hardware News   Hardware News : More Natami boards for developers!
posted by noXLar on 31-Jul-2011 22:37:23 (5331 reads)
At Sunday the 17th of July Jens, Thomas, and I met and Thomas brought us 2 Natami MX boards! There will be even more boards for driver development soon.

In the meantime, we will enhance the board usage documentation from a developers perspective, to make it more easy for other devs and testers to start.

When Thomas arrived, we had already prepared a HD, that started without problems connected to the Natami.

Jens will also be busy with integrating his N68050
soft core into the design, which will make the still used 68060 card optional at some point.

Also note the S/P DIF connector that is assembled for our boards as well as the passive CPU cooler on the 060.

NatAmi feels like the best solution to the Amiga hobby market.

Such a cool product.

How are we going to find original Amiga keyboards for this thing? Amigakit should start refurbishing old ones.

NatAmi has an Amiga 500 keyboard connector on board, so it's not a problem.

It also supports normal PS/2 PC keyboards.
Theoretically also USB keyboards in the future but there is no low-level/early boot access to USB devices yet.

This is the only machine I would consider buying beyond the classic machines.

Any chance we'll see one of these at Amiwest in October?

Why the old school P2 mouse and keyboard connection, why not just support usb devices?

@Fairdinkem

Why? Because they want to make an Amiga clone of course. So it is compatible with Amiga peripherals. The board also has USB2, in case you missed that.

I find it amusing when people _complain_ about backwards compatibility.

Yes indeed, Amigas always used standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

The PS/2 connector is compatible with bigbox Amiga keyboards. A4000 keyboards directly, and A2000, A3000, and A4000T keyboards with a PS/2 to DIN adapter. The very same adapter that PC users have used for 25 years or so when connecting different kinds of keyboards. The board also has connectors for the A500 internal keyboard. This leaves the only non-compatible Amiga keyboards the A1200 and A600 internal keyboards and the A1000 keyboard. So I don't really see where you are aiming with your sarcasm.

The 9-pin Atari-standard connectors can connect all Amiga joysticks and mice, as well as Sega, Atari etc. peripherals, just like an Amiga can.

This AND compatibility with modern USB2.0 devices. I do not really see where the problem is?

I second this request! (and have posted such a request in several different threads on several different Amiga related forum sites in the past 6 months)

We need to have a Natami presence at this year's AmiWest Show.

Okay. It makes sense. I always thought big box Amigas used some proprietary connector. My mistake.

I might be buying one, too. Any estimates on prices? I haven't seen prices yet. I wonder if I could get the Natami to fit inside my A1200 desktop case. Natami + Blitz3 = possible Amiga coding addiction part 2.

Big-box Amiga keyboards use the same connectors as PC keyboards, but IIRC they're wired differently and mixing the two can damage the keyboard or motherboard. So is the Natami's keyboard port wired for PC or Amiga keyboards?
