Software News   Software News : New software releases by OnyxSoft
   posted by Deniil715 on 21-Sep-2011 8:38:57 (3491 reads)
OnyxSoft releases two updates of our software!

BackUp and DECH

Updated programs
BackUp v1.71 - (68k) Backup program that mirrors a directory structure and handles links.
- Added an average copying speed in kB or MB/s that will show after it is finished. Mostly interesting when you make the first complete backup since all time is considered including scanning, not just during actual copying.

If you transfer more than 2.5TB in one go the speed calculator sadly won't cope ;-P

DECH v1.50 - (68k) Deniil's E-Compiler Handler (which works for make, gcc or whatever too) is a graphical compiler aid.
- More descriptive gadget names.
- Editable gadget names.
- Ctrl-C in the console is sent to the executed program instead of eaten by DECH itself.
- Added datetime and bold to compile and run output to clearly mark where it starts when scrolling.
- Added a window sleepy pointer when compiling.
- The compiler priority wasn't properly loaded from prefs.
- Fixed some layout issues when using larger fonts.

I actually had a version ready in 2009 but forgot to release it so it has been 4 years since the last update of DECH even though I use it every day myself!

If you see a bug or have a suggestion, please don't hesitate to drop me an e-mail!

Thanks
I've learned over the years that you rip it apart so I have started to adapt the post as logically as possible.

Thanks, couldn't live without BackUp! Just installed it on my newly tuned gaming A1200/030 to backup (CLEAN!) over netmount share to MorphOS machine :) And for syncing my two MorphOS systems.. I don't have to install anything twice ;)

Thanks all!

BackUp is quite practical, even just for copying some larger directories. It's faster than Workbench or DOpus and gives you the ability to pause/resume, stop/restart without risking half-copied files or recopying what has already been copied. Not to mention the clean function. And you get some nice statistics at the end

And if you need to move the SDK I guess BackUp is pretty much the only way since it recreates softlinks correctly. I will know if a softlink is local to the partition or global and will recreate it accordingly.

I know it sounds partisan, but if you produced an OS4-native version, I would pay good money for it.

@tonyw

You don't trust the emulator?
I can assure you it works perfectly fine with petunia, and fast.

Besides, what GUI would it use as an OS4 native app? ReAction? How well would that work in a boot shell when nothing works but you need to backup your data partitions before reformatting, or restore your SYS: from a backup?

It is written in Amiga-E and uses EasyGUI which is a ("statically linked") gadtools engine as you might have noticed. To make it native I would first have to port it to PortablE, then try to get the EasyGUI engine to work in PE and then the multithreading. Then get everything as stable as it is now.

Hell yeah, I would charge money for that
The thought has occured to me though and Chris has made some effort porting EasyGUI but I'm not sure of its state and I have better things to do :)

I have just upgraded from v1.62, and wow!!!.
It used to take abot 1min 16secs to backup my work partition.
I have reformatted the backup to sfs2, and v1.71 takes just 26 seconds.
I use bakup every day, a great little program.

@Deniil71

Make it please also a commandline tool :) So it can be used in scripts. For systembackups, its best to not need ANY GUIs :)

Thanks,
nexus

It can already be used without GUI. Check the CLI Usage section in .guide. I have scripts for it to have testmode and real backup etc.

@nexus

jpv beat me too it, but he is right: It is also a complete CLI tool as well.

All features are available as CLI parameters in normal AmigaDOS style. When you run it from CLI you can also specify if you want the GUI to open (so you can see what happens) or if you like it to run quietly so you can have it in background scripts or something.

Now,

okay, okay! However, in that case, a port to AmigaOS4 without GUI is easily possible (but maybe not easy to do :p )

Thanks, I'll give it sooner or later a try.

@nexus

But why the obsession of "native" OS4 executables that does exactly the same thing, only 10 times larger?!?

The program uses some 3rd-party (non-open source) libraries that obviously cannot be ported but would have to be rewritten. They are used by the GUI. I can't remember exactly how tied everything is to the GUI but stripping it out would require a little work. Not impossible, but not trivial either.

Since it works so well I see little reason really...
