Software News   Software News : Movie Setter plugin for Hollywood released
   posted by softwarefailure on 7-Apr-2012 11:10:55 (5694 reads)
Airsoft Softwair has just released a very special Easter egg for all Hollywood users: A Hollywood plugin for videos created with Gold Disk's famous MovieSetter tool. MovieSetter (photo for collectors) is renowned in the Amiga community because it is the tool which Eric W. Schwartz used to create his legendary clips like the Aerotoons (screenshot), Flip the Frog and Clarisse Cat, Sabrina, the intro of Team17's Superfrog (screenshot), the very funny Anti Lemmin' Demo (screenshot), and of course the Juggette clips. Unfortunately, the original player written by Gold Disk bangs the hardware quite a lot and thus doesn't run on modern systems. But with the Movie Setter for Hollywood plugin you can now for the very first time experience Eric W. Schwartz's great animations in all their glory on your AmigaOS 4 or MorphOS system - fully PPC native with retargetable audio through AHI and RTG graphics as well! Only Hollywood makes it possible!

You can download the plugin from the official Hollywood portal. Thanks to Hollywood 5.0's cross-platform plugin system versions for AmigaOS3 (Classic), AmigaOS3 (FPU), AmigaOS4, MorphOS, WarpOS, AROS (Intel), Linux (PowerPC), Linux (Intel), Mac OS (PowerPC), Mac OS (Intel) and Windows are provided.

As a special convenience service we have also created a single archive that contains most of Eric's animations in just one file. You can download this file from here. Airsoft Softwair wishes all Amiga users a Happy Easter!

Nice!

Are you planning to support other formats as well? =)

nice.

I would have preferred an Amos compatibility plugin, then thousands of code could work instantly.

Even a bounty for it would be something.

Only problem with Hollywood is lack of examples and tutorials, the ones provided are nowhere near enough.

after Amos, examples, a compiler to Android.

Website with list of commands and examples, or wiki.

Question is can I create Superfrog with it ? Is the speed there ?

I have an older version, but it is not as easy as Amos.

Even today I think I could do Superfrog on Amos, Hollywood - dunno.

@asymetrix

Hollywood only runs in TrueColor mode: 24-bit graphics minimum. Amos runs on the Amiga chipset only. The Amos compiler is inefficient but does the job. You're better off learning C or PortablE at this point if you're looking for a programming language. Hollywood is mainly a presentation engine with scripting aspects.

Hollywoos 5 have a new hw sprite engine that give us all the speed we need ofr making games finally :)

I've done some test examples and compiling it with Hollywood 4.7 or 5 gives me about 4x/5x speed increase!

For the code examples you simply have to buy Hollywood register on the official forum and you found some nice one also simply asking you get always kindly replyes :)

An yes, it works only in fullcolor screen but it was compatible with quite [all] OS around the world inlcuded iOS and Android! :)

Not enough?

EDIT: the only real problem with Hollywood imho was that it wasnt multithreading, but was quite easy(I made my pogram LoView without any programming skill and the guid was really clear and extensive) to understand ansd study and powerfull!

Sorry, but that's really an understatement beyond compare. Please stop spreading such "information" when you don't know what you're talking about.

Well done!

The new plugin-system seems to add a lot of new features into Hollywood! This really is the most exciting software-package being developed to AmigaOS :D

Best regards

Unfortunately there are many "Amiga users" thinking about Hollywood as a PowerPoint, the blame is our because the Hollywood users make few games and programs to silence these gossips.

Please tell me which version you have and I will describe the differences.
From V1.x it is changed dramatically.

I can see there is a lot of misunderstanding, desinformation and underrating is around Hollywood. Let me clear this picture, tell me what version you have.

That is false. Where did you seen that?

I had a column for several years in a leading computer magazin in the '90s about Amos. Made a lot of things in Amos, created extensions for it, and this time using Hollywood all day. I know both of them, really! Your description is very misleading!

I would be happy to help you to see the correct image, so next time let's ask before state at least questionable statements!

For a start try the windows demo verision if you have no access the full version on Amiga/MOS/Aros.

Bye!

Hollywood Designer = PowerPoint like presentations and more

Hollywood - Core language that does everything else.

@Samurai-Crow

Guess you haven't download Jack or LoView neither of which are 'presentation' software. Since when did powerpoint have video, music or image effect support + tons of other features? However, I haven't used PowerPoint in like 10+ years so feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

@asymetrix

Documentation is much improved in Hollywood 5, available in AmigaGuide, HTML and PDF formats. HTML documentation is a god-send, hate AmigaGuide.

As for tutorials, Andreas gives you the basic knowledge you need to get started, you go away and figure out the rest yourself which is pretty much the same as any other language that I have ever encountered.

@Samurai_Crow

true, but there are NO complete games tutorials for Amiga written in C or C++.

We are luck to get a single GFX example in C, we really are still in the stone age.

Interesting, are these speed tests done on Classic systems or PPC ?

Are there any plans for other than RTG screenmodes ?

or a converter that form a 24bit screen/game to say 8 for classic ?

Not really, the main reply was ' real manual and figure it out'.

Its not just that, one example that was provided was a packman game - but it was not responsive enough, that could be coding, but it left an impression of what Hollywood 4.7 is capable of, so anything more complex was in my mind a ' no no'.

@Lazi

Hollywood 4.7 Win

Typical answer I got everywhere. Thanx. Your a kind helpful. Noted.

Please compare how many examples came with AmosPro and Hollywood 4.7.

Please provide a link to online HTML reference so I may compare command set.

Please provide an example of platform game that represents what Hollywood can do.

@Samurai_Crow

I know a little C/C++ am going to have to get the boring setup installed and figure games creation in C on Amiga- all alone.

I have just upgraded my Hollywood installation to version 5.0 and look forward to using it a lot in the next few months.

I think Hollywood is a very important tool for Amiga OS4.x, MorphOS2.x and AROS programmers who want to easily write presentations and programs for multiple platforms. For this reason alone, it is an important product for the Amiga community.

The amount of work that has been done to improve Hollywood & Hollywood Designer, and the fact that it is still actively being worked on, and that the additional plugins can be further developed for Hollywood, all these things add up to a great programming tool for all of us.

If anyone here has even the slightest interest in programming on any of the Amiga inspired platforms, I strongly suggest that you support Hollywood & Hollywood Designer, by purchasing them ASAP and learning to use them. Hollywood might be easier to learn than some of the other alternative programming languages.

We should support Amiga programmers who are doing quality work such as Hollywood & Hollywood Designer (plus the plug-in's), with our purchases, if we want to expect them and other programmers to continue to create quality software for us to use.
