software OS4   software OS4 : AWeb 3.5.10 Special update for AmigaOS 4.1
posted by broadblues on 20-May-2012 16:12:23 (3784 reads)
After some considerable time, I finally tracked down and fixed the "last" of some nasty bugs that were intrduced / revealed by the update of AmigaOS to version 4.1

This release makes those fixes available.

Why AWeb in this day and age of OWB and Timeberwolf? Well AWeb is fast, and if you don't need CSS then it leaves any other Amiga browser standing. This makes it particularly suitable for reading local documentation in html format etc.

If you're a webdesigner it can be useful for seeing how your pages degrade in the absense of CSS, you can see very quickly id your page structure is sane, and likely to be navigable but non visual user agents.

AWeb also has some powerful and under used features in it's ARexx interface. It can call scripts from local pages and thus build quite sophistcated dynamic applications. IIRC a magazine coverdisk used to use this feature to great effect.

(this does not work pages on or from the web for the obvious security reasons)

get it from os4depot

I actually always like AWeb on classic applications and I regularly used it when browsing the internet with the AmigaForever suite.

I'll sure give it a try.

Thanks for this update

Interesting

If i remember correctly James Jacobs create a fork for it taking the latest source code and adding some compiling changes for OS3

http://amigan.1emu.net/releases

Now that the new OS4 version is availible at this point maybe both project can be merged again ?

Thanks for that!

Back in the day I could never decide which browser to use on my Classic Amiga. I bought and supported both AWeb and IBrowse and regularly switched back and forward between the two.

If I had to choose, I suppose IBrowse just shaded it for me, but I'm really pleased to see this sepcial AWeb update. Well done.

Thanks Andy,

Back in the day, I purchased AWeb-II for my A2000HD.

I used AWeb APL Lite 3.5.09 (May 28 2007) OS4.0 PPC for a long time with OS4.0.

I have installed AWeb APL Lite 3.5.10 (May 20 2012 OS4.1 PPC to give it a try.

How hard it would be to add CSS support into AWeb ?

Nice! I had almost forgotten about AWeb. Well done and you are right, it is really fast. Probably the fastest Internet browser I have used. I hope new updates are coming.

I have been using AWeb forever, even on X1000.
It's great for local files and playing on-line MIDI
and other music formats.

Thanks for the great news.

IBrowse was the pleasant for user as bought a few times.
AWeb is fast and cruel and free.

We can not get the best of all which is a shame. Really looking forward to the next machine that can run it. Now going with Chrome as FireFox is a bit heavy and IE is just too pc.
