Software News   Software News : S3Cmd release brings mainstream S3 online cloud storage and backup to the Amiga
posted by AlexC on 7-Feb-2013 11:20:02 (2034 reads)
I have just released a slightly modified version of the latest S3Cmd script and libraries for Python 2.5 which gives you access to Amazon S3 from the Shell. It also provides support for CloudFront and S3 Websites.

Click READ MORE for additional info:

Most of the online storage and backup services out there use proprietary Windows/OSX clients or require using a browser to upload data.
As Amazon provide an API to connect directly to their servers I thought that it would be nice if the Amiga too could have transparent access to their cloud storage service.

After exploring the various solutions I settled for S3Cmd as it only needs Python which comes pre-installed with OS4 and I wanted to keep it as simple to install as possible so that anyone else could use it too.

With S3Cmd you will be able to easily load/save, backup/restore and share data on the cloud with your Amiga.

No more excuses for not having backups!

The S3C archive can be downloaded from Aminet and OS4Depot.

For S3Cmd to be of any use you'll need an Amazon Web Services (AWS) account.
Currently Amazon gives a whole year for free from the date you sign up and their free offer includes a lot more than storage.
See http://aws.amazon.com/free/ for details.

As far as I know the latest version of Python for OS3.x is 2.4 so it might take some effort and modifications to get S3Cmd working.

It might work as-is on AROS and MOS as these have Python 2.5.

If you want to try it on these platforms, remove the pre-compiled .pyc binaries in the S3 drawer.

This is neat!

I fixed the two broken download links. The os4depot link works fine now. I cannot confirm the aminet link because they are working on the aminet site at the present time.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

thanks for fixing the link, I guessed the aminet one based on the url of other files in comm/tcp as news items can't be edited later.

You are welcome.

I think that should work, but something is wrong. I cannot find the archive in the "Recent" nor in the "comm/tcp" directories. I even ran a system search for it. Are you sure your AmiNet Upload worked? Maybe they have a hidden area where uploads are gathered before being noted in the "Recent" directory.

Maybe not for you, but for staff it is possible. Just send one of us a PM with your corrections for the news item.

@Moxee

I uploaded it via FTP to the "new" drawer. It's likely that items in that drawer are not visible to avoid having people grab unverified archives.

I tried the aminet link now and it works so my guess was right

What I'll do next time is just say "soon on Aminet" with a link to the main page as it would appear there eventually.

I better get started on some GUI for S3Cmd now

Most likely.
