Software News   Software News : WookieChat becomes Open Source Software
   posted by deadwood on 30-May-2013 6:45:02 (3524 reads)
WookieChat is now available as open source software, released under terms of AROS Public License 1.1. The project is hosted at sourceforge.net:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/wookiechat/

WookieChat is a multi-platform (AmigaOS 3, AmigaOS 4, MorphOS and AROS), MUI-based IRC client which was initially developed by James Carroll. I'm current looking for people interested in either maintaining the MorphOS/AmigaOS builds and/or improving the existing program. If you are interested, just let me know.

Thanks a lot, jahc! WookieChat is an excellent IRC client, and releasing the sources is appreciated a lot.

But please don't use the AROS Public License - it's a custom license, which results in all kind of weird problems (like when you're trying to mix code using different licenses) without giving you or the users any benefits. Even the AROS guys themselves have noticed by now that using a custom license wasn't a good idea.

If you want a public domain license, use the original Mozilla Public License - which is pretty much identical to the AROS license, they just replaced the term "Mozilla" throughout the document - or BSD. If you want a copyleft license, use GPL.

@cgutjah

maybe, but aros license is good enough for mos team, it is certainly good enough for 68k amiga crowd. it would be probably better if aros was published under more commonly accepted license anyway, but this is another subject. i understand the decision was made because the maintenance was handed over to aros team as the only bigger open source team in amiga community except of yam team.

There's still time to change that. Why keep repeating that mistake? Granted, it's not a big deal - but it also won't take much effort to fix it...

@cg
has been discussed, hard part would be to trace every (past) contributor and gain his accpetance for license update/change.

I guess you already figured out the nonsense behind your suggestion. "Please, don't use this license because of it shortcomings, use that one instead, which is exactly the same".

Einstein owes you a beer.
