| Nice, but why doesn't it have perfect fit and the same colour as the A1200plastic? How hard could that be to achieve?
ps. Sorry if I sound negative. |

| It all comes down to the price: with a small customer base, we can produce things to a certain price point and to costs.
It is good fit at the moment, but to make it a perfect fit, you would require a £10,000 mould - this was not produced with a mould process but partly by hand.
Ivory colour to match the A1200 would require a special order of the materials and we would need to produce 1000's of these to make it worthwhile - instead of a small run of a few hundred. Last edited by amigakit on 04-Sep-2014 at 09:14 AM.

| @AmigaKit: Yes, I am aware of that but I can't believe this is cost related. It is a plastic peace for heavens sake. |

| That is the commercial realities of manufacturing on a small scale. We provide the best product we can in the financial constraints that we have to work to. Perhaps the Amiga reseller that you use will invest the time and go to the trouble of manufacturing a back plate ? _________________ Amiga Kit Amiga Store Links: www.amigakit.com | New Products | A600GS

| But plastic isn't inexpensive to form in small quantities! The most realistic way to do small quantities is 3D printing but that is expensive, will have the same color problem and also have a rough texture (from the layers of printed plastic). |

| 3D printing is not that expensive any more.
Color can be spray-painted.
If you do a batch of for example 50 pieces, you come down to a price of 5 - 10 Euros per piece. (cost of 3D-Printer not included)
Of course, this way of producing will not generate any profit. But you can produce perfect results in small batches for a reasonable price.
There will be more and more companies offering 3D-Printing.
Should be considered for the future.

| @megol & AmigaKit: High manufacturing costs? Can´t you just take covers from discarded Amigas and cut the part out from them? |

| nice idea but I just dremeled into the existing original small cover & all good. For the fair price this is a good option for those that don't want to get their hands dirty _________________ ____________________________ c64-2sids, A1000, A1200T-060@50(finally working!),A4000-CSMKIII ! Dremelling carefully takes time and of course, not everyone has access to a Dremel. For a few coins, customers can have a ready made solution.
@Niolator
Rear trapdoors are getting rare to find these days as is everything Amiga. Also its nice not to damage original parts of the Amiga. _________________ Amiga Kit Amiga Store Links: www.amigakit.com | New Products | A600GS

fully agree & hence my comment; however, for those that want their cover to match their case then this won't cut it. _________________ ____________________________ c64-2sids, A1000, A1200T-060@50(finally working!),A4000-CSMKIII ! | To anyone complaining - no one is forcing you to buy one.
@Amigakit Customers don't understand business issues (it's literally outside their experience), so I wouldn't try explaining it to them (most still won't understand). Last edited by ChrisH on 04-Sep-2014 at 07:08 PM.

| Seeing as it's at the back of the case you'd have to be pretty OCD to have it bother you. You can always dremel the original cover if you want that OEM look. |

| It's less than 4 quid - I think it is a bargain and at least it stops the DVI port from flopping about. A really neat idea and for such a low price too I would think all Indivision users would want one. _________________ Sam

| about 3d printing, as i've had and used an Ultimaker 3D printer for 2 years :)
this part would be easy and cheap to do, it could be modeled to fit perfectly and for color have a look at http://www.faberdashery.co.uk/products-page/ and look at the different colors they offer.
There are becomming several hi quality materials for 3D printing, and we have different types of nylon for strength (but its semi transparent, but you can dye it) ABS (lego plastic) for solid and good strength and colors(but not food safe) PLA (cheap, plastic made of corn and food safe but doesnt like temperatures over 50-60 degrees celsius)
Of cource for mass production (1000's)it would not be doable, but my printer have a 200x200mm printing surface and imagine placing as many backplates as these with the tallest edge upwards and there would probably fit...30-40 atleast depending of space between them and would probably take 5-6 hours depending of the resolution, my Ultimaker can print as low as 0.02mm layer height, but 0.1 is pretty fine(thickness of a paper) and you can barely see the layers, even if layers bother you, sanding them for 20 seconds would make PLA smoother than the orginal a1200 plastic, with ABS parts you hold the part over a cup of acetone and you get the glossy look of Apple products :)
I know i'm rambling off topic now, sorry about that :) |
