Hardware News   Hardware News : Poseidon drops support for Spider
posted by kgrach on 1-Aug-2003 6:08:09 (2539 reads)
Chris Hodges has posted the following on the poseidon site:

"Registration process closed!

As of 01-Aug-03, further support for Elbox hardware has been dropped for all times. No keyfile can be obtained anymore that will work with the Spider.
Users, who have registered before this date are not (yet) affected. Eventually, the free updates will cease at some point (but not this year)."

It is known that Chris isn't that keen on Elbox, but is it the user who will suffer? Time will tell...

The Amiga will suffer from this announcement. However, that's not to say that Chris isn't justified in taking this action.

From a Community point of view, this is very bad news. Love them or hate them, Elbox products are the products that maintain the Classic Amiga's viability in todays market.

hmm well this is why i told all my friends + myself....register what u can as fast as possible, but this spider thingy doesnt have anything about the "it sell crap so i will kill it" talks, its because of elbox beeing jackass's against chris...

its a shame, but i will continue to support both chris and elbox.... when shark ppc comes i will get it....if it comes :) , and since i am a regged user of poseidon means i support chris..

plz dont stop poseidon updates for spider ....hmm ...hffffff

well the elbox/spider user will probably not suffer that much... expect elbox to release their own USB stack Real-soon-now(tm) (or they will simply start working with the thylacine one,
which probably was in the works anyway since it is needed for OS4.)

I can write about my own experience with Chris Hodges.

I'm a Spider user from the very beginning. I bought keys for Poseidon early October directly from Chris. I paid him 20 EUR for them.

In March Chris Hodges unexpectedly switched off my keys, without even contacting me about it!
He did not give any specific reason, and in a Poseidon update, he wrote only this: 'Nevertheless, this is a free update for all registered and licensed users except for one. This "Rat" has to stick to the old version. Support is something bilateral.'

In public discussions Chris Hodges suggests that I have did some terrible things against him, which is untrue. He does not respond to my public questions about the actual reason for his switching off my personal keys!

Now I am of the opinion that Chris Hodges is simply a dishonest and unreliable person. He does not care about users, and he makes his support dependent on his private whims.

It seems that Chris Hodges is trying to brake the agreement with Elbox in the same way he did with my keys. Elbox agreement with Hodges was published here. More info about this agreement was on the Mediator ML here.
In my opinion Chris Hodges is forced to do this by Micheal Boehmer (highway/subway/algor producer), like it was in my case.

I'm very sorry about it. The Elbox products are fantastic.

Chris i hope you find an agreement, you can't penalize the users, please.

I agree with some of what Chris says, however I do not agree that he can now turn around and punish users of the Spider.
I purchased my registration for his product (as I do all my Amiga products) and as a registered user I expect the same support as everyone else.

If this is not to be the case, then it will be him who looks like the bad guy not Elbox, because right or wrong regarding the Elbox/Chris situation... dropping support for currently REGISTERED users is certainly NOT the right thing to do
