Regrets?!?!?!?!?!!?!

You didn´t even attend Mrs Friedman´s French classes. You kept on wagging along with Mr Erlendsen´s Art class. Of course, I wasn´t totally innocent never used to wake up for PE class in the mornings .

@Bodie

Mrs Friedman wasn´t my French teacher. It was Ms Sauvignon.

Agh, I hate French (the language not the people! no offense!) I just couldn't understand why everything had to be male or female, confused the hell out of me. That and I really wasn't interested, despite my mother trying to get me interested as she (and therefore I) have French blood only 4 generations removed from me!

Why is a table masculine & a chair feminine ?

Remember that since you don't have feminine/masculine distinction in your language you are thinking of it as related to the sex of a person, we don't. Just like orange is both a colour and a fruit, we see feminine/masculine as the gender of people and as a way to sort our words. Actually, I think that most languages have a feminine/masculine (and sometimes neutral) syntax, English is the exception

I think the main reason is because we use articles with our names (le la) and people thought that la table sounded better than le table, so table became a feminine word

English lost much of its inflections in the 11th Century when Bill came across and the old French and old English languages collided.

There are still traces of genders in Engish: eg cars and ships are usually seen as feminine.

In most inflected languages, gender is as a result of etymology (the history of the word - eg if its a descendent of a latin/greek word) or of the shape of the word - eg -ette words are (f), -ent are (m) etc.

In the vast majority of cases, getting the gender wrong won't prevent reasonably secure communication taking place. You might sound odd, but you'll be understood. *

A smattering of GCSE/O level French and a bit of common sense renders most ICT-based French and German sites legible. There's alwat Babelfish too ;)

* rare exceptions are when similar looking words have different meanings according to the gender. EG "le livre" = book, "la livre" = pound (£ or the weight) in French.

Must put that Raymond Devos sketch about trying to catch a bus for Caen through Babelfish and see who goes mad first

I'd forgotten that sketch - doesn't quite work in English though ;)

It could be so much coarser, too!

It is both in German and French... the French language has two genders ("le", "la"), the german
language has three genders ("der", "die", "das").

Usually it is especially hard for people from one language to learn the other... sometimes things which have one gender in German have a different one in french (The word "Tower" is masculine in german, but feminine in French, for example - if
I remember right, I was not that well in speaking
french...)

Adding a third gender isn't too bad, but try explaining the difference between nominative, accusative, genitive and dative to 13 year olds and why the Germans have such fantastic declensions on articles and adjectives (16 forms of the word "the" anyone?) ;)

Of course in many languages gender also effects verb conjugations :(

On the whole though, the English are (generally) just rubbish at even trying to learn new languages :( :( :(
