| Wasn't Halflife based on a 3rd party 3D engine? Might be a bit complicated to open source _if_ it's not a 100% sierra/valve inhouse production.

It's based on a mixture of Quake 1 (it started out as a Quake 1 mod) and Quake 2, both of which have already been released as open source.
However, I don't think a GPL release of HL is going to happen as long as Counterstrike is still sold as a standalone product... I'd be happy to be proven wrong, though... HalfLife was one of the best games ever... *Great* atmosphere _________________ Thomas, the kernel guy

the PS2 porters stated that the HL1 source was largly in intel-asm (the PS2 port apparently is not even really a port, but more a emulation of the engine) so... could one then argue it as being Quake1 or/and quake2 based if it does not contain Quake1 or/and quake2 source code (at least not recognised as that for the 'human' eye)?
(legally it might still be a id license issue for valve)

Day of Defeat was also recently released and probably doing very well thus further reducing the possibility of Half-Life going GPL. Ohh well, maybe Sierra will surprise us!
Let us hope that id eventually release the source code for Quake 3 . |

| @bodie: "Let us hope that id eventually release the source code for Quake 3 ." That is a great engine much better than Half-life's one It's funny to see that CounterStrike runs worse than Quake3 on the same hardware... Quake3 is something I'd like to see on Amiga It should run very smothly on any AmigaOne/Pegasos _________________ The only spanish amiga news web page/club: CUAZ

Ahh, JKII luv that game. When I first played that game, however, I was distracted by the female character. I kept on shooting her, erm, bottom.
I really liked the multiplayer component to that game. But I always got my arse sabbered once to often! |

| How much I want HL to be released! Hopefully they then port Day of Defeat (I've been playing since 1.3 with brother Bodie).
However, I would also love to see Ravenshield, V8 Supercars (TOCA???), MOHAA, and Ghost Recon. _________________

Well, I think I know what you mean The two only things that I found... disturbing about the game was that it started out as a shooter, and you got the light saber only after a few levels of play... JK III should be better in that respect.
And of course these little bugs (animals not programming errors) in the mines...

I think you need an astronomically good ping for that game - it's very much based on reaction speed. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail
