software Classic   software Classic : APC&TCP: Update 1.14 for Roadshow TCP/IP stack available now
posted by AndreasM on 14-Sep-2020 17:13:40 (2433 reads)
Slightly delayed by only two years, the free Roadshow TCP/IP stack 1.14 update is now available to all customers.

This update fixes a number of long standing bugs, improves performance and accuracy in the TCP/IP stack itself, as well as adding new features to the shell commands which ship with it.

New features include support for the remote shell command (rsh) and Roadshow's new built-in remote shell server: you can now build networks of Amigas and small computer systems, allowing Amiga programs to be started over the network, allow the Amiga to start programs on other computers and exchange data through this channel.

The update process itself has been reworked, enabling you to update Roadshow versions 1.9-1.13 in one single step. Which software is updated, and if/why some software cannot be updated, is also stated clearly.

Our profound thanks go to everybody who contributed bug reports and enhancement requests during the past two years, and especially the beta testers who made shipping the 1.14 update possible in the first place!

This update is available through https://www.amigashop.org/, in the download area of the customer account you used when you ordered Roadshow.

Yes, but all in good time. I did investigate how to port the rcp program, and I think it's doable. The really hard part is in making rcp share the I/O streams of the rsh command.

The rcp command makes assumptions about these being sockets, and there is currently no API in bsdsocket.library or the TCP: handler (which wraps the bsdsocket.library sockets into file handles) to perform the equivalent of a dup() Unix kernel system call on the rsh I/O streams for rcp to make use of the sockets.

I have an idea how to make this work, but after taking so long to release an update (sorry! I never expected to spend two years working on it), I thought I'd ship the improved Roadshow first. One major feature of Roadshow 1.14 is the much improved update script which should make it much easier to release further Roadshow updates.

Is this update also intended for AmigaOS 4.1?

The AmigaOS 2.x/3.x version and the AmigaOS 4.x version of Roadshow build from the same source code. The Roadshow 1.14 version sold through APC&TCP is for AmigaOS 2.x/3.x only (and it likely works on MorphOS, too).

AmigaOS 4.x updates have been larger updates in the past, and as far as I know there currently is nothing in the wings for smaller incremental AmigaOS 4.x updates. The developers, myself included, have been steadily working on the operating system over the years. There is updated, tested software waiting to be released.

Great. So, another 4 years of waiting for the next AmigaOS 4.1 update? MorphOS Team has released four new versions of the system during that time. AmigaOS 4.1 Final Update, this time Really final update 2?

Steven Solie fired, lawsuit against Cloanto, etc... Does anyone in Hyperion still work on AmigaOS?

Hey, I can't tell you anything new...

The situation is what it is. We are doing our best to cope with it and keep the lights burning, every one of us in our own way.

About rcp, there are a few options
* ancient rcp for AmiTCP works - http://aminet.net/package/comm/tcp/rcp
* for copying files from/to amiga from "modern" systems (as well as remote shell on Amiga, and more), there is squirt - https://github.com/alpine9000/squirt

Would buy a new OS4 for the XE anytime with an up to date Net Program. Miami and IB was fine in 1996.

Starting it then again. Two more weeks or years. Getting old eventually myself;)

I'll wait. and just for the sake maybe one manufacturer for drivers. One Printer, One joystick etc Please surprise us and we maybe all buy One that supported?

If was in the business would call some Samsung etc.

You know better. Please surprise us.

Thank You.

What was actually fixed? I'm tring to find out, but all news points me to German forums, I can’t read.

How is this better to use a slower 68k version of TCP IP stack? And will it work with PowerPC native TCP devices?

Will this version work with Basilisk and EUAE and so on?

Whoops! I didn't expect that the old AmiTCP code would work, but then I didn't anticipate that you could open an interactive shell through Roadshow 1.14's new built-in shell service either.

My plan, when I find the time to put it into practice, is still to start over with the 4.4BSD-Lite2 rcp command code I already looked at. The design is clever and probably requires that the rcp command is made resident: for every directory to be copied recursively, rcp is started all over again.

And, before I forget, thank you for tempting me to write that rsh command for Roadshow Without it, there wouldn't have been the new Roadshow 1.14 build-in shell service.

The change list is some 170 lines long, and posting such material in this forum is frowned upon. You can find this information in the Roadshow 1.14 demo version archive, though, where it's part of the "ReadMe" file. That demo version should be available from the APC&TCP web site.

If there's no alternative, or the feature set is somehow more attractive than the alternative offerings, it might do.

It won't make a good replacement for the PowerPC native Roadshow TCP/IP stack that is part of AmigaOS 4.

As long as you have a network device driver at hand which can be used, it should work well
