News : Microsoft Windows 98 Is Dead. |
posted by Anonymous on 11-Dec-2002 19:13:03 (2198 reads) |
Windows98(and the 98 se variant) recently entered what microsoft calls the "Extended phase" of its lifecycle. This according to Microsoft means that Windows98 will no longer be sold at your local branch of PCWorld etc. Importantly, all support options such as updates bug fixes, will be limited. June 2003 Windows enters `NON-Supported phase` at the point windows 98 can kiss its horrible ass goodbye as far as MIcrosoft is concerned. There will be shed, loads of HomeMade websites still on the net dedicated to WIndows 98 but these will be non Official. Dont even bother with windows ME, Me is and will allways be the "seriously bugged version of windows" Me`s life cycle will end on 31 December 2003 when all support for Me will stop.

| Well right now they are desperately trying to entice you over to XP, which IMO isn't all that great either - still suffering no end of stability problems even after SP1 (just ask a friend of mine about his brand spanking new PC and the problems he has had with lockups, crashes and all round instability with his Home XP Edition - especially given he doesn't fissle with the machine or install anything out of the ordinary on it) not to mention the hassle with actually getting drivers installed on it that it doesnt moan about not being digitally signed by MS.
Their next edition (currently known as Longhorn), was due out in 2005, then 2004, then 2003, then put back to 2004. Seeing as all support for 9x, and 2000 is stopping in the near future, it looks like you'll all be forced over to XP or their new OS, unless youre one of those who refuses to be manhandled onto yet another duff MS OS release, and sticks to a 9x variant or dual boots 9x and 2000/XP to get the best of both worlds. _________________ Test sig (new)
