Internet News   Internet News : AmigaOne Lite and AW.net covered at Slashdot
   posted by CodeSmith on 23-Sep-2003 5:36:41 (8429 reads)
Just went over to slashdot, and they've picked up AmigaOne Lite news on this very site.

The Slashdot link is here.

Amid the usual comments I noticed a rather vocal Anonymous Coward, who was making a big deal of the Amiga, Inc court case and helpfully suggesting an alternative Amiga platform

If you are experiencing slowness then please note that this is not unusual for a website being covered by Slashdot, as Slashdot causes so much traffic.

Hopefully everything will continue to hold during the load. Currently AmigaWorld seems to manage without any real problem at all.

Heads down everyone, the Slashdot crowd are looking our way!

The comment about putting a Paypal button next to links on /. so's people who get their websites melted can receive some sort of compensation made me smile. I wonder if doing that would /. Paypal?

One thing I am unhappy about. Why do some people feel the need to flame us about OUR chosen platform? Are they fearful that some of their market share will be taken away by the AInc & co. efforts? Why do they need to feel compelled to PRE-judge something they have little knowledge of? The "Amiga is dead" some have written there... me thinks not! Do you know what I mean?

@ Bodie_CI5

Knowing Slashdot's vocal minority pretty well, I believe it's safe to say this is pretty standard behaviour for their forums. Even "mainstream" platforms Linux, Windows and Mac receive their fair share of trolling.

In the case of Amigas we have the bad luck that we have to deal with a rather rabid group of competitor supporters, trying everything in their power to stop the Phoenix from rising. However IMO their tactics is also counter-productive for their platform and they will not succeed.

I haven't even read the comments on /. coz it doesn't matter. Not the slightest. I don't think they fear the Amiga. Meybe they have been "burned" knowwhatimean? :)

She's back and that's all that matters. I'm actually quite amazed by all the publicity we've gotten lately. People seems to care. I think it's great!

@ MikeB

Yeah I know what you mean. I hope that the competitor supporters as you so aptly put it will renege from the behaviour that they every so often display. Each to their own is what I reckon.

Oh look, Nathaniel Downes from Genesi is there, telling everybody there's nothing "Amiga" about the AmigaOne Lite. And apparently, the Pegasos 2 will cost a fraction of what the A1 Lite will. I sure am glad he's around to shed an unbiased light on things. I still remember his excellent analysis of the SciTech Snap deal (it was actually bad news, who would have guessed?).

Am I the only one who feels like punching this guy?

I am reminded of the famous scene in Airplane, where the woman goes hysterical......

@Kay

No... no you're not, I can assure you!

I personally would love to see Nate Downes saying these things face to face with Hyperion and Eyetech... do you think he would have the guts to? Or is he just using the internet as his shield?

@Topic
On the whole, the replies aren't too negative for the /. crowd - most surprising and heartening I have to say!

Ian

Im just going to wait untill OS4 is out before I even buy an AmigaONE. I just can not see the point in rushing out and buying a machine with out an OS. Linux ok maybe, but I just wan`t a full operating system first. IMHO

@ Kay

There are, all in all, about 10 (or so) that I feel that way about. You can probably guess every single one. Let's just take the higher road. The fact that they are getting so bent over the AmigaOne lite and OS4 running on AmigaOne hardware only indicates that they are really starting to feel threatened (ie. Eyetech and Hyperion are doing something right). The better things look on the AmigaOne front, the more vocal they will become (and you thought that wasn't possible!).

It's going on sale on October 15, and they'll tell you the specs later! Remember that "News Reminder" on AO that came in during the excitement over the AmigaOne Lite and OS4 news? (Anyone see a pattern here?)

Looks like the PHP caching we installed recently has help reduce server load when there's a lot of traffic.

@Those who are annoyed

Choice 1: Just remember this, bookmark it, and take revenge when someone about Pegasos is posted on Slashdot. When they bleat just point to the link.

Choice 2: Think "Does anyone care?" I mean they obviously care enough to basically attempt to undermine every bit of external publicity that the Amiga gets these days but wider than this the geek Slashdot audience aint going to care about the "Its really a Teron board" or juvenile bleating "its not an Amiga" or "Amiga Inc only has 100$ in the bank" stuff. C'mon, these are the people that tolerate Red Hat, Mandrake and many other financially challenged institutions. The people that post this stuff just come across as petty mudslingers.

Choice 3: Post about it on unrelated fora. Bookmark it, send it to your friends who wouldn't go otherwise and highlight their behaviour.

I'd vote for #2. Move on.

@Bodie_CI5

Of course the Amiga's dead! That's why this website is here and new hardware is out with a new OS update near completition! Has to be a dead platform!
