software Classic   software Classic : AmiFox WWW Browser for 68k Released
   posted by dan.hutch on 5-Mar-2023 22:28:08 (2681 reads)
A new type of browser for Classic Amiga is ready for the Public! Alb42, McDope, and I are proud to present a totally new way to surf the web with an Amiga home computer.

AmiFox is not an ordinary web browser. Instead, it is a WWW (which stands for World Wide Web) browser with additional features. In this WWW browser, you can see almost every webpage as they should. Except for the video content on web pages. Gaming online is also very limited. But apart from these exceptions. AmiFox gives the WWW experience a totally new meaning for many Amiga users.

This very first release of AmiFox requires an Amiga with 68020+ and 8MB of RAM + Hard Drive, Ethernet connection, and MUI 3.8 installed. It will work on OCS, ECS, AGA, and RTG.

This looks promising, has anyone given this a go yet?

Would have been nice if it used ReAction instead of the old MUI but I guess MUI is more universal & most have it installed already.

I did see a post from somebody a few days ago saying it worked well. Haven't tried it myself yet, am intending to when I have some time.

Can I host my own server?

Yes it is possible to use an own WRP server. You can either use the original WRP or the patched special version for AmiFox from us. Our special version offers more function than the original (most of all click and drag of mouse, possible to download files, security token, SSL if wanted)

You can also use the ready to use docker container here are some scripts to get the container, start and stop it: AmiFoxServer-Scripts

To tell AmiFox to use that server add the Tooltype to the AmiFox icon: WRPSERVER=http://server_name_or_ip:port if you gave it a security token to connect you set that also via an ToolType WRPTOKEN=xxxx

In case TLS causes trouble for you, you can force disable it by using the tooltype UseSSL=NO.

I tried it on a A1200 with Blizzard 060.

It starts , it seems to do a lot of stuff when entering a website.
But screens stays very blank....
I tried UseSSL=NO , no change.

Not working for me.

App is not tested well is my conclusion.

I have AmiSSL 5.7 and MUI 3.8

I tried it and it's a bit slow (this might be because of the network connection which is over a serial link, or because of the shared server), and the server side docker isn't built for arm64 so I didn't have anything useful to run it on, and I couldn't be bothered to install go 1.15 (the version in Debian repo is too old as usual) to build the app myself.

Promising but not that useable yet.

Well I suppose its not a bad first public showing for a Web Browser type app for our old 68k Amigas. We can live in hope for better things to come.... I'm glad someone is at least trying a different approach for viewing the Web.

Nice idea :) Works perfectly on MorphOS. It rendered the website almost identical with Wayfarer latest ver. in terms of speed, however scrolling is really - really slow to the point it becomes barely usable.

Here's a grab to feast your eyes: https://i.ibb.co/h7P3JpY/amifox.png
