posted by MikeB on 20-Oct-2003 19:24:01 (2919 reads)
The dvdrtools software package which consists of 4 CLI programs (dvdrecord, readcd, mkisofs, cdda2wav) has been ported to AmigaOS (68k). The main program (dvdrecord) also has an Arexx-GUI. Currently CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW are supported.

Update: The webpage has now been translated into English.

Here the package can be downloaded and more information can be found written in the German language.

The program was ported from Linux to AmigaOS and the source code is available here.

No the current port is 68k-only but at the webpage it is stated by the person who ported it that anyone is free to create PPC or x86 native versions.

I made a small edit wihin the original text to clarify that this is a 68k AmigaOS port. Maybe the 68k version will already work with AmigaOS4 under emulation.

I think it's been generally agreed that the lack of DVD burning solutions on the Amiga is a massive disadvantage, so it's great to see these sort of ports being released!

Personally I hope MakeCD come up with a DVD burning upgrade very soon for OS4

Well, with DVD writers getting down to an attractive price now (I've seen them at Best Buy for around $150 US) this will make a nice additon to the AmigaOne with OS4. Yet one more "hole" filled in. Even if it's not the top choice (some do just want updated MakeCD etc...), just to be able to have that option will be nice.

I purchased a DVD-R / DVD-RW from Fry's Electronics (California, USA) for $99, plus it came with a $20 rebate (still haven't received the rebate yet). Its the same drive that Apple uses for their SuperDrive. This was back in May of this year. It works GREAT on my 2.4Ghz P4. It would be great to use it on my Miggy. Now I can!

Sure, lots

try AMP 2.x, it also has a decent deCSS implementation and don't seem to choke on any of the movies I've tried (Japanese, american, european etc.). and it has got a option to make it viable to play the movies quite fast on a low specced PPC machine... far superior to froggerng in this respect.

LOL MikeB! You're a legend! Thanks for that. Now just to wait for my not working A4000, then spruce it up a little, and away I go!

Yeah, I saw one listed on Pricewatch (Ricoh brand) for $99 as well. Man, that's really a good price. I'll have to get one now.

You also need a Filesystem that supports the DVD format. CacheCDFS doesn't cope atm, as I tried and just got read errors all over the DVD for anything over about 2GB.

ATM that means having to use AllegroCDFS.

Not unless your 4000 has PPC. AMP2 is PPC only which MikeB forgot to mention

@ _Steve_

Wouldn't the 680x0 machines be too slow to play DVD's anyhow?

Really? Thats odd, before it died my panasonic DVD rom had no problems at all with CacheCDFS (that came with OS3.5), I used it with disks over 4GB, no read errors of any kind. Of course now it is broken I dont get any errors (or anything else) of any kind

@MikeB: Very amusing

@Bodie_CI5: Yes, at least if you intended to finish watching a 3 hour film sometime before the week was over
