Would you buy the following brand new book, written from scratch, tackling C development on OS4?

Spiral bound, A5 format, approx 300 pages

Price: £12 + p&p from the UK

Chapter Headings:

0.Setting up: SDK, tools, resources etc
1.Simple ReAction tutorials
2.Main ReAction gadgets
3.Screens, Windows, Menus and Requesters
4.Starting up: running from Shell and WB; arguments, tooltypes etc
5.Simple graphics
6.Handling text and fonts
7.File handling basics
8.Advanced file handling, clipboard, iffparse etc
9.Using Datatypes
10.Multi-tasking, messaging, semaphores etc
11.Libraries and shared objects
12.Completing the program: localisation; installer scripts; AmiUpdate etc

Well, would you? I need to find out how big a print run to do...

I have been reading through generic books on C, but have not been able to get my hands on any in depth Amiga specific instruction. I could have bought some RKMs a while back, but was dissuaded by those who said they were out of date.

Hello

Absolutely yes! This is needed for AmigaOS, it's very diificult to find Amiga specific information in one place. For some of us, it is THE most needed documentation right now.

Congratulations on this effort. This will make it easier for people to develop for AmigaOS 4.x.

Regards,
Efrén

I take it that this is something you have planned/are working on. £12 sounds like a fair price especially compared to some the books on the high which are useless because they teach C/C++ as defined by MS, thus meaning that the code won't compile outside of Visual Studio.

I'd like to see some chapters on device drivers. Networking, IDE/SATA, graphics, etc. devices. The more people who know how, the more drivers we'll have.

What about a chapter on debugging?

@thread

This book is a must have, I would happily pay double for this.

Also I would like some beginners guide in developing applications from start to finish.

More advanced books could include details on:

* Setting up GCC
* Developers know the structure of Amiga programs.
* Learn how to open multiple libraries and devices correctly and cleanly close.
* Learn how to manipulate data between libraries and devices.
* Learn how to wrap Library functions in Classes and manipulate with other Classes and Functions.

* Create your own Library from scratch
* Create your own gadget/widget from scratch

* Game development on Amiga
* Networking on Amiga
* Amiga API compatibility tutorials

Electronic documentation is nice to have, but you can't beat a proper book.

I hope you can do it in a friendly, easy to pick up manner, like the one I am reading now, Absolute Beginers in C - Greg Perry, Its very easy to pick up.

Put me down for one... i will definitely have one. I am currently reading back issues of TAM, DaveP's great tutorial on C, but more information is always appreciated. I have just got the Amiga Developer CDs V1.1 and V2.1.

I'd buy it. I agree that it'd be good if it included more advanced stuff (gcc, devices etc) to help build drivers. Even if that pumped its price. Or you could make another book with those additional things as suggested. Either way, it's a yes from me.
