For anything... You want to play a DVD and have some background tasks ? Well, nowadays you can't, cause DVD is eating almost everything. Too bad you have to stop your background tasks on a... multitasking OS.

I bet that £15 DVD player I bought for my son yesterday doesn't have a multi-GHz CPU. Throwing CPU power at DVD decoding is a very Windows way of thinking. I'd prefer a hardware decoder on a PCI card or even built into the motherboard.

Quote:
A lot of sites are also eating a lot of CPU. Again, I'm pretty sure you could handle one tab running at a time... Now what happens if your listening to some clip and have more tabs... Too bad this will come to the max your CPU can handle and you'll have to stop your video,.. and so on

I've never had a problem so far running TuneNet and having several tabs open. I don't tend to watch video and try to read at the same time.

Quote:
That's without talking about big demanding apps, like games, 3D applications.
Of course, there are no 3D apps/games right now. But if you don't have a fast processor, there will *never* be any ;)

So by having multi-Ghz CPUs we're going to suddenly attract 100s of new developers? from where?

Quote:
That's also without talking about audio/video encoding.

Again, personally I'd prefer a hardware solution. Bit more Amiga-like imho

Quote:
That's also without talking about reduced compilation times (which could be even more reduced by using multiple cores btw).

For all of those 100s of developers, I suppose. My own apps are quite small and tend to compile in less than a minute or so. I use the time to pause and think.

Quote:
Should I go on ?

If you like

Quote:
The faster the better, in *any* case: there's no need to argue. Saying it's not needed is a lame excuse for the fact we don't have anything faster right now...

Ah, I think that will be the fundamental difference between us then. I don't agree that faster is always better. My knackered old Astra can just about do 100mph (according to my wife), however there's no real need and the extra cost of running it at that speed (fuel, cooling, lubrication, extra wear and tear, not to mention the speed fines) far outweigh the slight advantage of getting some slightly quicker.

Quote:
By using this kind of thinking, we would still be running 68000@7Mhz apps: what's the use of 600Mhz after all ?

There is clearly a difference between having extra speed for a precise software requirement and having if for the sake of bragging rights. In fact I still occasioanaly use my A600 for basic typing and other bits and pieces simply because it's in a very convenient location (the spare bedroom) and because it does the job.

@All

I can only hope that the secret project involves AmigaOS to run on new technology hardwares, like that of Cell and something similar, using Multi-Cores and quickly bring AmigaOS to the 64-bit platform. I believe that could be it, but w don't yet know before the time is right..
