New uA1 CPU module in the Works!

Just ordered my uA1 from Software Hut and I thought I would pass on some info from my discussions with them.

1. Software Hut will be receiving 20 uA1 boards next week. About 12 of them will be used to fill outstanding orders. Several more people are just waiting for them to be in stock before placing an order.

2. It doesn't look like any new XE G4 motherboards are going to be available any time soon. Probably at least 4 months or longer if they even do another run. EyeTech is spending their money producing uA1 boards.

and now.....the one you've been waiting for:

3. Work is currently going on to create a new CPU module for the uA1.
It's a 1.4GHz G4 module which will "probably" be available around the end of February. No word on price.

I did consider delaying my uA1 motherboard order until then, but Software Hut wasn't sure there would be mohterboards available at that time. LIke they say," a bird in the had is worth two in the bush." It seems like the motherboards are being made in relatively small batches due to lack of funds. The good news is there does seem to be a decent demand.

I'm not vouching for the accuracy of what Software Hut told me, I'm just passing on what I was told. Hop you find it intresting.

This would be sweet!

I'm hoping it's the Freescale 7448 chip at 1.4Ghz consumes less then 10 Watts. In the past Eyetech has stated they stayed with G3's due to heat concerns but I think this new chip would get them to the G4 for the uA1.

Are these also compatible with the XE boards?

Will they be available as upgrades if they are compatible?

Might a trade-up plan be worked out with the G4-800 or G3 CPU cards? Or would I need to hope some XE-G3 user would want to buy my G4-800 module?

Neat!

Regarding price:

A new Freescale MC7447AHX1420LB costs around $460US unless Eyetech has managed to get some kind of special deal, note that this this is just for the CPU. I doubt that Eyetech has got there hands on a 7448 as it's iirc not slated untill H2-05, though I'd not mind being suprised

The dealer margin will most likely be around $100US, but will naturally vary from dealer to dealer

Costs of development + Eyetech's margins + cost of the PCB (and it's components) + it's production +shipping and handeling. Say $100US

VAT (Depens on where you are of course)

So my estimate of the end cost would end up being around $660US-$825US, depending on the dealer and local VAT laws.

[edit] added url & (Ed. No. 2) price estimate [/edit]

AOneXE and MicroA1-C have MegArray connector so, I think it won't be a problem.

Excellent news... Now if they can just replace that 7000 graphics for 8500

It would be a storming board !!

Still, it shows the board is a "seller" otherwise Alan certainly wouldn't even contemplate any "add ons" Which is good news in itself.

@all

So if you upgraded what would you do with your existing processor???

I would suggest sending the processor back to eyetech who could give them a test and re use them reducing the price for some people to gain entry to the amiga.

*IF* I ever upgraded I would think that this is a possible solution to what to do with the left over processor. if we could knock 100 pounds of the price how many people would be tempted to buy a uA1,

we know that some people are unable to afford it at the current price and by reducing the costs this might be an option, they would be sold under the condition that the purchaser is aware of the fact that it is a second hand processor. (less comeback) it would also show eyetech that we appricate thier work.

otherwise the processor will just sit there. after all your going to buy the module and it will come in a padded box so all you have to do is switch the processors get it up and running then ship the old processor back to eyetech,

Too bad it wasn't a board that could fit your old processor and the new one on it. That would make things interesting!

I beleive the XE and uA1 boards use the same CPU module so my guess is they would work in both. Don't qoute me on that though.

My understanding is the modules would be available as upgrades.

I did hear anything about a trade-in but my guess would be not since they are on such a tight budget and trade-in programs cost money. Maybe individual dealers would be willing to support some kind of trade-in program but I wouldn't count on it.

If it's compatible with my A1XE I will buy one.
That will give some headaches to PEG MORPHOS Distributed net crunchers

Ok. Now I've been wondering for some time. What is this Distributed net?

First I thought it was some sort of filesharing scheme. But now it sounds like some sort of contest?

Can anyone give me a short explaination or a link to one?

The XE and Micro-A1-C share the same physical connector. OS4 would need to be ported to whatever new CPU comes along as well of course. I'm sure that won't take Hyperion more than a couple of hours...
