| I have a brand new Core 2 Duo system on an Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard with 2 gigs of DDR2 Ram, two 320 SATA-2 drives in a raid-0 configuration and an ATI X1600Pro PCI-E graphic card. The machine is running Windows XP PRO 100% stable (tested with memtest86 and prime95).
I downloaded and installed the latest AmiKit. It is not stable. Sometimes it boots, sometimes it freezes right after the emulation starts at a black screen. Sometimes it boots half way, sometimes it boots all the way in and works for awhile.
Same with the latest WinUAE...
Is there any known issues between the Core 2 Duo chips and WinUAE/AmiKit?

Surely it has to do with your win configuration. Check it out. Here in my pc it works just fine.

Probably, I've used Amikit, Amithlon, and WinUAE before on AMD Athlon XP and 64 systems. This is the first Intel system I've purchased in years...probably some problem with the new Intel Core 2 CPU's?

Don't think it's the Core 2 chip, I've been using WinUAE on one for 3 maybe 4 weeks now. It's the e6300. Haven't had any issues with WinUAE, other than it's damn fast! First Intel chip I've liked in a long time.

I've never been able to get AmiKit to work with a number of the previous versions (haven't tried the latest) on a number of systems, both AMD and Intel. I had the same problem with the emulation freezing just after the Workbench screen appears.
I basically gave up trying to get it to work.
Kind regards,

Works fine here on my AMD system, and I`ve written an article about Amikit for the next issue of the Crypt magazine and here is our article on how to install the program. |

Works fine here for me on both mine and my brothers systems..
One is a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, the other is a Dual Xeon 3.6GHz EM64T..
WinUAE and AmiKit work fine on both of them... _________________ Back to action! |

I've already read the article for the next issue.
I've tried and tried to get AmiKit to work, but alas to no avail. It seems to be that one of the programs causes the emulation to freeze, which if my memory serves it was the 'Start' bar utility.
Kind regards,

First of all, please confirm whether this is AmiKit only issue. I mean does it also happen with eg. AIAB or AmigaSYS package? Or with plain Workbench? If so, it must be something in your PC HW or SW config.

It is both plain winuae and Amikit. Do you think perhaps some software running on Windows (eg. anti-virus) is conflicting with it? I will try tonight to disable other running programs to see if they are potentially causing a conflict.

Well I'm in the same boat. Tried to run AmiKit 1.2.0 on a somewhat similar system with the exact same problems you have. I never got it past the install stage. Lockups all over the place.
I'm going to try AmigaForever 2006 now to see if it behaves the same there.
Config:
Intel Core Dua 2 E6700 Asus P5B Deluxe/Wifi-AP Asus GF 7950 GX2 gfx-card Creative X-Fi Elite 4 GB PC-6400 Corsair RAM Loads of SATA disks...

| @HammerD I've steered clear of multi-core Windows systems, as in my limited experience many drivers (and/or Windows XP itself) simply do not work well when "tricked" into running on them. I'm sure they'll sort it eventually (esp with Vista), but I'm in no rush. Same for 64-bit processors too - better to stay in 32-bit mode. Maybe Linux does better than Windows? _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue... |

I guess WinUAE is the "problem" or XP itself (AMD X2 CPUs need a patch to fix a "timer" problem that some games were having with a dual core CPU (actually the games were using the wrong timer model or something, kinda forgot what it was)), maybe someting similar is happening with WinUAE in Cure Duos.
Try to set WinUAE to only use one core (use taskmanager to set the afinity) Or try to disable "JIT" and see if that fixes the problem.
Try to see if Intel and/or MS has a patch for XP with dual core intel chips (AMD has one for their CPUs) and/or report the problem to the WinUAE developer(s) maybe he/they know a sollution. _________________ ~ Everything you say will be misquoted and used against you.. ~ |

It should be said that it runs smooth on my AMD X2 4800+ with 4 GB RAM on a Asus A8N32-SLI motherboard and a Geforce 7900 GTX card. None of the problems I see on the Intel Core 2 is present on the AMD system. _________________ A1200 with DKB Cobra 68030 + CF · A2000 with SCSI2SD · A4000 '040 with Mediator and Voodoo 5 |

Setting Affinity for only one CPU for the WinUAE task seems to solve the problem! Thanks!
UPDATE: Seems I spoke too soon. AmiKit finished the install process and when it was going to start it completely locked up. Had to do a hard reset to get the machine back..
Tried running Amiga Forever and that seemed to run fine. Last edited by Englyst on 03-Oct-2006 at 11:03 PM.

Well you nailed it. It works without the JIT....booted perfectly two times in a row, which I've never done before. Must be something with the JIT and Intel Core 2 (or Dual core Intel's in general) that has problems with the JIT...
I guess the WinUAE authors should be notified...
Can anyone else confirm this - if you have a Core 2 Duo turn off JIT in the CPU section of WinUAE config, save the the config, and boot AmiKit...
It's not very fast without JIT tho :( _________________ AmigaOS 4.x Beta Tester - Classic Amiga enthusiast - http://www.hd-zone.com is my Amiga Blog, check it out! |

It's been a long time since I looked at WinUAE sources, but...
...the JIT used to make an assumption about the effects of a certain x86 instruction, which behaved in a certain way on all processors I had available to me at the time (and making this assumption was at the suggestion of Bernd Schmid, the UAE author, who was earning his living working on gcc at the time). The architecture manual, however, did not make any guarantees. Turns out, when the Pentium4 came out, Intel had changed the behaviour of that instruction, and thus broken things for the JIT in UAE. But seeing as the change was slight, and the JIT only rarely used the instruction, the breakage was rather subtle. Once identified, it was (comparatively) easy to fix --- whenever a P4 was detected, the changed instruction wasn't used, and a more complex and slightly slower replacement put in its place.
It's possible that the Core 2 chips have made the same change, yet aren't covered by the detection mechanism. |

Just installed Amiga Forever 2006 and AmiKit 1.2.2 on my Dual AMD and everything works as it should there. Same setup.
So apparently we have to wait until this is fixed to get it running on the Duo Core 2 CPU's... Mind you I'm getting a Kentsfield Quad core when they are released and let's hope it won't b0rk on that one! _________________ A1200 with DKB Cobra 68030 + CF · A2000 with SCSI2SD · A4000 '040 with Mediator and Voodoo 5 |

I should try Amithlon on this system. I purchased it before the "troubles" so I guess my copy is as legal as it can be...
