MS are doing a new rev that will support HDMI, thought I am happy using the component connection, I doubt HDMI will improve the picture much more. | The answer is it depends. There's lots of variables in here. Size of TV. Distance from TV. Quality of the TV. Quality of the HDMI decoder in the TV vs the component decoder in the player. Clarity of the component inputs of the TV, etc. Appropriate cabling interconnects. Variability of the person. There are likely best options but each person should test to determine which they like best.
I've found strange things with my wife where she likes things a bit differently then I do for our TV visuals. For some reason she can't tell when a speaker is missing yet I readily can. She can tell right away when I reconnect the cable, for example, to the speaker that it sounds better. But, for some reason she doesn't seem to detect a missing speaker. Strange - yes she does admit to other sound issues so I'm willing to entertain she has a slight lost at certain dBs. |

Huh, who says RSX doesn't have vertex shaders?
Xenos has 48 pipelines capable of running either pixel or vertex shaders whereas RSX has 24 dedicated pixel shader pipelines and 8 vertex shader pipelines.
Each pipeline on the RSX is capable of more operations / cycle than the pipelines on the Xenos.
Although Xenos technically does have much higher vertex shader performance than the RSX its important to remember that most of its pipelines will be used by pixel shaders rather than vertex.
As for PS3 using its SPE's for graphics processing, I've first hand seen the rain-on-camera effect (using the SPE's) in F1: CE and it was jaw droppingly impressive..

EDIT: Wrote 16 pixel pipelines instead of 24. Last edited by Skunkfish on 11-Dec-2006 at 04:50 PM.

If I recall correctly, it was stated during an interview on the Major Nelson podcast that there was nothing stopping them from putting out an HDMI cable for current Xbox 360s and it was something they'd consider if demand was high enough. |

Yes there are other solutions out there and they compare well. Sony should actually work with Apple to setup a PS3-iTV interaction as a competing product, IMO. |
I have a Mac Mini PVR setup that nicely complements the 360. I use the Mini for all standard resolution playback/recording, since I just have analogue cable anyway. The Mini serves music, pictures and wmv files to the Xbox seamlessly thanks to Connect360.
I consider it the best of both worlds |

| As far as first generation PS3 games go, a lot of them seem to be pretty much straight Xbox 360 ports making little specific use of the PS3 hardware.
While the PS3 does seem to have a little trouble with titles ported from the 360, I'm sure if a title was developed for the PS3 and ported to the Xbox 360 the 360 would similarly suffer.

A little interview at Sony's Liverpool Studios. Graham Ankers, game director of Formula One Championship, F1 looks very nice. Also includes Namco Bandai’s Hideo Teramoto, associate director of Ridge Racer 7.

| I ran into this article today, I am sure everyone here remembers the legendary Wing Commander one of the first big 3D hits on the Amiga.. Well apparently one of those guys is on the XNA Game studio at Microsoft and I found a video of the XBox 360 running in 1080p mode using just one CORE doing 2x Anti-aliasing..
For those thinking that today's systems lack power, this is pretty amazing to see and will drive the point home about just what's possible with today's systems even using a Single Core..
It's pretty cool..
1080p on xbox 360 running with 2x Antialiasing using only one core
Just think what's possible with more than one core or even more than 3 Lot's of potential here folks. |

Interesting video. Took a while to download though, at first over 1000 kb/s, dropping below 400 kb/s. Playing alternative Music is a nice feature. Good to see Microsoft now claim that 1080P games can be done. |

They've never claimed the opposite, so why do YOU keep claiming that they have? |

Xbox exec speaking with Kikizo Games had his doubts about Sony's claim that PS3 games will feature 'full HD' (1080p resolution): "I think 1080p, just to address that directly, will be basically impossible." |

I like statements regarding rivals if you have something nice to say, like Sony execs stating the Nintendo Wii is fun. Lair and some other future titles will prove how amazing 1080P games will become.
I don't like them to attack Factor 5 or other very competent PS3 developers. |

I stand corrected.
One guy was wrong. The tech guys at MS who have spoken about this, however, have merely said that 1080p games won't have the same visual fidelity as the same game running at 720p (and taking maximum advantage of the hardware).
He should have been more careful with his wording, because it seems like he basically meant the same thing, since he says that no developer has a performing game at 1080p - which may well have been true at the time.
It's still basically false and it's odd considering that he should know that 360 is capable of doing this too, even if it's just a bullet point feature. Last edited by Trezzer on 11-Dec-2006 at 10:47 PM.

Huh, who says RSX doesn't have vertex shaders? |
Refer to http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2453&p=9
If RSX follows DX9c class G70/G71 then it's is a known quantity.
Quote:
Each pipeline on the RSX is capable of more operations / cycle than the pipelines on the Xenos. |
Refer to http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzcxLDM=
"First off, we reported on page 2 in our chart that the capable “Shader Performance” of the Xbox 360 GPU is 48 billion shader operations per second. While that is what Microsoft told us, Mr. Feldstein of ATI let us know that the Xbox 360 GPU is capable of doing two of those shaders per cycle. So yes, if programmed for correctly, the Xbox 360 GPU is capable of 96 billion shader operations per second. Compare this with ATI’s current PC add-in flagship card and the Xbox 360 more than doubles its abilities**"
**Not factoring 2006 era R580 class GPUs.
In http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35372/?spage=8
To quote ATI on the 360’s GPU.....
"On chip, the shaders are organized in three SIMD engines with 16 processors per unit, for a total of 48 shaders. Each of these shaders is comprised of four ALUs that can execute a single operation per cycle, so that each shader unit can execute four floating-point ops per cycle." 48 shader units * 4 ops per cycle = 192 shader ops per clock Xenos is clocked at 500MHZ *192 shader ops per clock = 96 billion shader ops per second.
Like R580's 512 threads (aka Ultra-Threads), Xenos only supports 64 threads. nVidia's G80 support 1000 threads (aka GigaThread). Last edited by Hammer on 12-Dec-2006 at 11:10 AM.
