Do you have a quote stating that PS3 games will blow away the competition at launch? It takes time and effort to demonstrate that the PS3 is the most powerful games console, just like early Amiga games didn't show off the Amiga's true potential.
I don't think it's bad per se to offer PS3 games developers more freedom. Also IMO the PS3 online shop offers much potential for smaller projects. Projects which may not have been viable at normal retail prices, distributed on more costly discs and offering quality packaging (especially at small quantities). |

Those criticisms definitely apply to other genres. I used FPS as an example, but you could equally ask when people are going to stop buying the latest Burnout (for example) because they're essentially buying the same game they already own.
I think if Sony weren't aware of this they wouldn't be looking at alternative ways to charge for Gran Turismo. That to me is a costly mistake at this point though. It's directly up against the cheaper 360, the wireless racing wheel, and a none-too-shabby Forza 2.
I'm happy that people think the games market is still as varied and vibrant as ever. Those arguments make sense, but I hope people acknowledge that there's subjectivity on both sides. We'll see if any of these machines can win the living room. On that I'll bow out of the discussion rather than derail it.

It appears that at least some developers agree with my perspectives, for instance WarDevil for the XBox 360 has now been cancelled and will appear as an exclusive for the PS3.

The game will be running in 1080P and has a budget of around 20 Million USD and is expected in 2008. Hhhmm, interesting.
Maybe it wasn't such an insane idea of me that we will see some very impressive 1080P native games in the future afterall? Why else would anyone want to invest 20 Million on a game like this which would become less impressive than what we could expect from the XBox 360 running in 720P? |

| Surely the WarDevil team anticipates that there will be 10s of millions PS3 owners already out there at the time of release.
Considering this is a predictions thread I would like to predict that both Nintendo Wii and Microsoft XBox 360 will sell less than 40 Million units during their life cycle. I expect the PS3 to at least do as well as Playstation and Playstation 2 models did, selling more than 100 Million units. I don't care too much about the bad press the PS3 is currently receiving, there will be plenty of nice things to report in the future.
Regarding games, considering the huge library of interesting games planned for the PS3, I will have to make some hard choices down the road. As I also have a personal life to worry about and can't afford to play games all day long.
But considering the PS3's potential Black & White 2 may well have been my last PC game I'll ever buy (OK, actually my gf bought the game for me). Fingers crossed I'm right about all of this. Last edited by MikeB on 13-Dec-2006 at 09:43 PM.

Wishful thinking: If only the upgradeable harddrive could be used out of the box for TV recording.... |
Info from Sony President of Worldwide Studios:
"XMB multi-tasking (to what extent, however, is unknown -- can we browse the Internet while downloading a demo?), new XMB display options (a fix for the scaling issues?), new animations for audio playback, new photo album options, PlayStation Store auto-resume and a PSP Remote Access option to access PS3 content via any Internet connection are all on the table.
Sony also plans to incorporate Tivo-like features into the machine sometime in the late summer/early fall of next year."

Surely that would require a harddrive add-on?
And those standard harddrives would quickly be full. I think currently I have some 80 gigs recorded from TV.

I'm quite pleased about the PS3 owners' fortune in this case. Usually it's the other way around. It would almost be boring if there were no exclusives for PS3/games moving to it.
The price isn't all that overwhelming though. I mean.. that's what the first Shenmue game for Dreamcast cost in 2000. Last edited by Trezzer on 13-Dec-2006 at 10:45 PM. Last edited by Trezzer on 13-Dec-2006 at 10:45 PM.

This will be interesting to see. They'll need a new remote, an input interface, a IR changer for devices, and quite a bit of programming. I'm sure it can be done but people complaining the Xbox360 HDDVD is a seperate box are they going to give the same complaints to a seperate box for this? Undoubtably the harddrive will need an upgrade. Too bad it's a 2.5" laptop harddrive they are historically more expensive then the larger 3.5" desktop size. Prices will come down but it'd have benefited the users more had a 3.5" drive been available. I suppose another method could be the additional hardware could come with it's own harddrive.
And scratch the idea of a blutooth remote! People want to use universal remotes the Sony PS3 won't work with them as none do blutooth.

Sony's VP was questioned by the Press on the March 07 release of the PS3 in Europe. Rumors are the date will slip to May 07 and a few are saying Sept 07. VP Harrison's reply to the press. "Given that all of our previous statements about launching in Europe simultaneously with the US and Japan turned out not to be the case, I would not like to make any definitive statements on that. It's not my job to comment on hardware supply issues other than to say some very smart people are working very hard to catch up."
Of course that could be good for you in Europe as the US and Japan will have worked out the bugs for ya. |

| I just got back from buying the latest release on Xbox Live Arcade. It's Assault Heroes and costs a mere 800 points. Check out this baby.
It even has giant crabs
Fans of Contra / Ikari Warriors should *not* miss out on this one.
It's pretty amazing what can be fit in 50 megs. The recent release of Roboblitz was also quite breathtaking. Advanced physics and the Unreal Engine 3 with the works.
It's almost like the Good Old Days(TM) are back. Last edited by Trezzer on 14-Dec-2006 at 01:14 AM.

They seem to have taken these statements to mean there will be a further delay, Sony have now denied this however. They're currently talking about launching sometime in the 1st 2 weeks of March. It will cost less than £425 (632¤) No 20GB version. No VGA cables. (grrrr)
On a rather more negative note they have also said there will be no RSX driver "for security reasons". Looks like someone needs to get cracking on a SPE 2D graphics lib and a Cell optimised version of MESA..._________________ Whyzzat? |

I don´t know if i understand correctly what you mean, but Shenmue costed more than 70 million dollars, and it was finished in 1999. Of course it was a breaktrough at that time, but now 20 million is a very normal budget. It is not a star game. |

No, although various PS3 projects will top this though.
The much hyped 'Gears of War' costed about half of this to produce. |

Apparently currently this isn't the case with all legacy software:

According to Gizmondo the PS2 game Final Fantasy XII looks almost identical or better if played on a PS3. |

Which PS3 games were cancelled to become XBox 360 exclusives? Games developers making the decision to go multi-platform isn't quite the same thing and makes much sense if your game doesn't do anything another platform would not be able to deal with as well. |

PS3 adds jaggies (or doesn't eliminate them) to PS2 games. |
No, it appears to be a pixel flipping issue affecting some PS3 setups. According to various engineers it will take a simple firmware update to solve the problem.
Apparently Sony has now confirmed it's a software issue, a firmware update solving this problem should become available early January. |

Elveon, Splinter Cell: DA and Condemned.
As you point out many went from PS3-exclusives to be released on 360 as well such as Fatal Intertia, Assassins Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV and Bladestorm. |

Sorry but this information sucks almost as much as you trying to correct me (well, in fact, almost anybody can guess what kind of info this people provide just looking at the page).
Shenmue took "just" 5 years to develop, from 1994 to 1999 (it was created to show the saturn could compete against the ps1 in 3d and surpass it, not the megadrive, for god's sake), and based on informations from Sega, it costed approximatelly 70 million, although no one know the exact numbers.
The team was composed of 250!!! professionals in its most active times. So now make your numbers:
The salaries of 250 of the most professional japanese devs * 5 years + infrastucture costs + travels to china (various locations and several times) to take photos and know exactly the places that would appear in the game (remenber the game try to recreate exactly (even the weather it had the same days in 1986) some locations from japan and china.
Simply the numbers don´t balance. It is MORE that 20 million, ok? |
