Ok, so 4.1 is on the way and looks really good. I see some newer graphics card options in the upgrade. So my question is this..... Will I finally be able to use my Ati All-in-wonder Radeon 8500dv card with OS4.1?

This was the card I originally got for my AmigaOne, but had to downgrade to a Radeon 7000 since it did not work at the time. I remember it being a known issue that would be worked on eventually.

Very good question indeed, i also have en Radeon 8500 laying around, which i was hoping to use in the A1 some day. it did work in 2D, but 3D had some weird issues that i know rouge was trying to figure out.

hope a new driver is included in OS4.1

Just get a Radeon 9250.

It's the best supported video card for OS 4 and really isn't all that much slower as the 8500. Also these cards are cheap.

(i also have a 8500 available to plug in - currently using a 9000pro).

i have a 9800 pro sitting here awaiting drivers
bought it when i first ordered my A1 almost 5 years ago
still in the box it was tried and run ok in 2d
now i would love to run it in 3d on my A1
currently i have the 9000 in the A1

I'm afraid the 8500 doesn't work. It will not hang, but for whatever reason, the output is not correct. It seems to me that the card either duplicates or "swallows" vertices, so the output will be distorted.

I tried but couldn't get it to render correctly. Couldn't put too much time in it either.

"if" being the operative word. Here in the USA i've looked at tigerdirect, computergate and newegg. Almost all the 9250's listed are PCI. AGP's listed are 8x.

How's the 2x PCI slot on the XE's? Are there issues with using a PCI graphics card?

You could probably get one from ebay.

An "8x" AGP card will work at any lower bus speed like 2x. The only thing to worry about is that it might use different signal voltages.

A PCI graphics card will work as long as your XE has not been "fixed".

I've just got a Radeon 9250 from a dealer on E-Bay, to be ready for 4.1 on my A1XE.
It is a Connect 3D version, 256Mb, brand new in shrinkwrapped box.
On the box, it says 'AGP 2x 4x 8x , so should fit all sizes!!

What's wrong with "fixed" A1s that they can't use PCI graphics cards? Could they use these cards in the 33 MHz slots at least?

IIRC the fix consist of some interruption rerouting unfortunately this let to an unusable 66 Mhz PCI slot. All is *IIRC*

I think this card needs a uboot x86 emulation update first. I used to have one, but the system would not boot due to unimplemented x86 instructions used by the graphics bios on this board. Because of that I don't think uboot ever handed off to OS4 so we couldn't even do any initialization separately. I recently gave away my AIW 8500DV card. This peculiar error seems specific to the AIW 8500DV card. I have another 8500 card (not AIW, and maybe the not-DV AIW8500 is good too) that posts and boots fine.

Thank you for the info! Always glad to hear from you. What you describe sounds exactly like what I remember the last time I tried to get my AIW 8500dv to work. Oh well, guess it's hopeless then.

From your link, it appears as if the 8500 is actually the best. it is #111. IIRC,16 levels above the 9000. Though it's really a moot point if the 8500 will not work.

I think I remember having a problem with UBoot and my aiw 8500dv card. UBoot had no display.... So you may be right. Or perhaps my memory is flawed... Not sure on this one. lol. You say the std. 8500 card works?! I know that there is a big difference between the "All in wonder" cards and their base models. The aiw's have a tv card and a firewire port built in, and though, hope aside, I found it unlikely I'd ever get thoes features working, I always thought the issue that kept the card as a whole from giving an image, was a problem with the base 8500 chip set on board.

I don't know who started the rumor about fixing your A1 renders PCI cards nonfunctional. Do not state it ever again please as it is a complete fabrication.

I suspect a bluebunny idiot since a "fixed" April peg has PCI issues. These issues are strictly related to the PEG design and not an AtriciaS issue.

I have a DMA fixed A1XE motherboard and I am currently using a Saphire Radeon 9250 PCI card in it.

I just happen to use a Voodoo 5500 pci card when bench testing an A1XE after I perform the DMA and USB mod.

The DMA fix on the A1 is related to the Via southbridge giving a burst of garbage at the end of a IDE DMA request. the fix reroutes it through the ISA REQ which doesn't exhibit this.

Don't worry an 8x card will work fine in a 2x slot.

The 8x is related to the cards max speed.

Did you know you can use an 16X PCI Express card in an 1X PCI Express slot by simply cutting out the back of the connector so the card fits. You will find some PC mobos the actually have the backend of the PCI Express 4x slots done this way so you can stick a graphics card in it. Most of the lowend cards and 2 years or older high end cards don't get a speed increase by using more than four lanes anyway.
