No you need to supply a graphics solution - large saving here but everyone makes pci-express these days
There are extra slots
then there is the fascinating zigbee option - is there an OS4.1 driver for this?

Very true. PCI bus is too slow for graphics of any real power these days.
I didn't realise either. Gawwed, we need some better hardware. The other offer is was too short for me too. no expandability, limited mem and graphics. It's like buying a new A500 these days. _________________ It's not the question that's the problem, it's the problem that's the question. |

| @utri007 Why not buy a SAM440ep now and then upgrade and sell if/when a Flex version of AmigaOS is released?
Maybe ACube will offer upgrade options. Nobody knows but waiting is less fun. _________________ ExecSG Team Lead |

| When I got my MicroAOne, I did not tell "shame, there is only one PCI port" because I know we always want more ... 3 years later, the slot is still empty and I can't tell how I am satisfied by my machine. Everything I need is on-board (gfx, network, audio, USB, ...).
Some people will not have any machine because they always will find something that is not like they would. It is a chance to see new machines available, when they will be sold out, I suppose it will be a new opportunity to complain ...
Yes, the price is not that low but it can be explained. Yes, the Sam440 expansion is limited by only one slot. Yes it would be better to have a processor at 1 GHz or an AMCC 460, ...
I hope Sam440-Flex will be available soon to let the choice to future buyers and I hope everyone will find what it is looking for.
Let's have fun with Amiga !

You might as well wait to the eternity. I am considering to buy one now and IF there will be better models, I can always sell it and buy a new.

Current model is OK for me about horsepower.
PCI is OK allso, it's much better than my curren t Zorro II.
I just think that flex model wouldn't cost so much. |

Sam440 might not be the Amiga-hardware i have in might, but certainly it has some new features that are important. What is important however is that there are new Amiga-hardwares capable of running AmigaOS 4.1. That's important! _________________ Helge K. Leaving the Amiga in favour of a PC.. |

Regarding the Sam440 board, the Mobility Radeon M9 is on the same 66MHz PCI bus, which is wired to a 66MHz PCI slot on the Sam440-Flex. Which means you'll get the same performance with a Sam440-Flex board with a PCI graphics card of equivalent performance as the M9 on the Sam440.
I agree with PCI being too slow for today's needs, however this is the first hardware which ACube developed, and the 440EP was the fastest SoC PPC chip avaialable at the time when they started working on it. If ACube get enough sales for the current boards, that would encourage them to develop boards based on newer and faster chips which became available since then, such as the 460EX, which is 1.2GHz, has L2 cache, DDR2 and PCI-Express. SoC chips are favoured because the CPU and northbridge are included in the same chip, which simplifies the hardware design, cuts down development time and thus development costs.
The Sam440 is a really cute little board with a lot of potential, and it proves again that computing is not just about the raw MHz (which you got used to in the PC world). It's not going to play HDTV quality h264 content (even the fastest PCs struggle with those) or do real-time special effects on streaming video like a Video Toaster, but for everyday computing, surfing the net, reading/writing emails/documents, chatting on MSN/ICQ/etc., viewing and editig your photos from your digital camera, saving your work on CDs/DVDs, listening to internet radio, etc. these the Sam will do just fine!
And if enough people buy it so the userbase becomes considerably larger than now, that will make the current developers more active, and attract new developers to the platform, which means there will be more and better software available. |

How sure of that are you.
The SAM does have an on-board FPGA depending on its performance and connection other resources (eg memory) it 'may' be be able to be configured to to decode h624 in real time.
The FPGA seems to be forgotten when people are making cost comparisons of this motherboard. Look into the cost of adding user programmable FPGA on PCI card, then tell me that the SAM is so expensive compared to a PC. |

correct.
In italian forums, you can read that:
1. OS 4.1 on SAM-Flex is real, and will be showcased at Pianeta Amiga next week 2. There are delays, so it will not be on sale at Pianeta Amiga. The 667MHz SAM440ep will be on sale 3. There are speculations on the Flex price: some say "a bit below ¤400", but take it with a grain of salt
Beta testers swear that it runs OS4.1 better than any existing A1, if that helps. _________________ La fortuna è cieca. La sfiga ci vede benissimo. |

OK, Cool.
Hopefully the Flex board can run OS4.1 too without much work... also it should be somewhat cheaper as the main component that makes the Sam440 so expensive is the onboard GPU (ATI Mobility Radeon M9)

Cool... BTW, what CPU does the flex use, or just the same as the 440?
