About 2.5"" SATA HDD ...

How much slower they are when compared to 3.5" drives?

((all my laptops have been insanely slow))

@KimmoK

It depends...if the 2.5" HDD is a 5400 rpm one then it's quite slow.

I changed my 5400 rpm 2.5" HDD in my laptop with a 7200rpm one and I have noticed a speed improvement, both are IDE.

SATA is supposed to faster anyway and also take into account that Windows sucks

(sorry that was a bit harsh....)

It would be nice to have a 2.5" SATA SSD hard disk

I got my lazy bones moving and learned about the differences of 2.5" and 3.5" drives.
http://www.digitaldingus.com/articles/2005sep/25dilemma.php

So, there might not be any big speed difference.
2.5" drive consume only 10% of the power of a 3.5" drive.
It dissipates 90% less heat.
etc...

So, it's not a problem, unless one want's the fastes computer of the solar system, that is not the SAM anyway...

update:
The cost is the biggest "problem" of 2.5" drives. 200G 5400rpm 2.5" drive costs 48¤ while 500G 7200rpm 3.5" costs about the same. 200G 7200rpm 2.5" drive seems to be around 75¤.

(now I'm considering to ripp my Acer laptop for parts for my SAM... ...)

(what's the best use for a x86 laptop motherboard? A frisbee? )

@KimmoK

2.5" drives are also much quieter and on a system that dose not require any cooling fans having a quiet HD is a big advantage.

@everyone

I have nearly managed to gather all the parts I need, a kind soul is sending me his SAM board, so I can test it with the design.

More news later.

Thank you

The 5400 2.5" HDD, 40Gb on my IBook G4 is about 22Mb/s... Crappy, cheap Samsung 160Gb/7200 rpm... 60Mb/s

640Mb/7200 rpm Caviar Black about 100 Mb/s

:D

@TheDaddy

I Think you can do a very beautiful case "copying" the upper right part of the A1200. The plastics stripes, the Leds and a laptop DVD in the side. It reminds Amiga and you don't use any logo. Al fully in black of course!!!

Well this is my idea...

Thank you for your work!!

@everyone

**Quick update**

I should get a SAM within the next 10 days (I believe) and some rough sketches and a very rough prototype should follow soon after that

@TheDaddy

About time you got a SAM... now all you need is to order another SAM... to help boost the sales volume.

LOL! It's a donation, I am borrowing it to test the case for the SAM.

Do we know how many SAMs have been sold?

It shouldn't be too difficult...everyone who has got one just say: "I have got one"

I have got my copy of OS4.1 on order though

Better idea. Just contact ACube and ask.

@TheDaddy

They're going to have a heck of a time come tax season if they 'don't know.' :-/

Of course, as usual, that doesn't mean they 'have to,' or are even willing to, work with 'an outsider,' even if the intentions are good.

Happy New Year!

And a small update:

I have dropped a few features and gone for more "off the shelf" components. Hopefully some pictures in the new year

Almost, I have almost everything I need, I have cut a few features (things that were making it too expensive) and I am trying to use off the shelf components but another thing is stopping me at the moment; not knowing if ACube are going to keep producing the mini-itx SAM (the case is based around this board).
