@Gothmog
If you want it to work automatically, without any manual configuration for your router, then do this:

In Interfaces, open the ppc440ep_eth.device config. UNtick "Use static IP address". Tick "Try dynamic configuration (DHCP)".

In Routes, delete EVERYTHING. There should be NO listed routes, and "Default Gateway Address" should be EMPTY.

In Hosts, you ONLY want an entry for 127.1 . Everything else should be deleted, unless you are doing something clever.

In Name Resolution, delete EVERYTHING. There should be NO DNS servers listed, and "Domain name search" should be EMPTY.

Now Save & reboot.

IMHO, this should be the default/suggested config, since it will work with 99.9% of routers.

@Faranheit

Thanks. What you described is exactly the second thing I did (after the wizard). It was a no go. I have also tried everything with both ports, but I can confirm that I have mostly been using port 0.

I will double check to see if I have all my settings right again and retry. Otherwise, I'll just wait for an improved wizard to come out (as has been suggested above). *sigh*

Thanks all tho!

First thing I would try is;

Start a shell and enter - netshutdown - all one word.

That would kill anything that is trying to occupy the ports. If their is something then
you should see a reply like - Waiting for network to shut down ...
Or if not in use then - The network is not currently in use.

Try, then let us know.

@Mechanic

Will do. It is interesting that everytime I reset things...it goes through the cycle of closing the network (says 'done) and then tries to initialize the interface and then that is where it "times out" and dies.

I will try what you suggested.

Have you tried my suggestion???? It should work.

BTW, port 0 is at the edge of the motherboard (farthest from everything else).

@ChrisH

yup, I tried it. No go same thing.....
1. "closes all connections"
2. Attempts to open the new connection on the SAM ethernet port (0 or 1 tried both).
3. Times out and closes.
4. All internet programs say there is not DNS path to host (despite these settings working on 3 PC's and one macmini.

I still think I am doing something wrong with the settings and I cant seem to figure it out. I tried the "minimalist" suggestion whereby you leave everything blank except for the local host and made sure the driver is correct (it signals it is fine when you do a 'test" of the port). :(

I also tried reinstalling the *entire* system and having a go with a 'virgin" setup wizard. Same result.

I really appreciate everyone's help but I think unless I go to an Amiga show and have someone show me what I am doing wrong or a new "wizard" comes along, I may have to pause for a bit. This is wasting a ton of my time now and leading to a lot of frustration.

I considered that something might be wrong with my board, but as I mentioned above, it "tests" itself out as being ok and functional. All other aspects of my SAM seem perfectly functional (which IS a goof thing and fun); however, internet has become so critical on any OS that it's gonna be a serious limitation for me on my SAM until I can solve whatever stupid mistake I am making here...

Why not explaining with lots of details your computers and modem for internet and each settings on roadshow program ???

Maybe we all understand more the problem............ There are no real reason to not arrive to have internet with a SAM because It's usually easy to do so.

Check your files and see how many interfaces you have lying around. What I would do is delete any you have in DEVS:Networks/Interfaces. You may have a rogue interfacing causing trouble. Reboot to clear the system. Don't try to shut the network down, this can fail and permanently stall it for that session. Start with a freshly booted system.

Then I would follow the Faranheit guide from page 8 up to page 10. Disregard the rest, it's for setting up Tunenet, We don't want to complicate the issue.

Now, as I understand it you want to user DHCP? Good, now, don't enter in any IP addresses. You shouldn't need to. Set all you can to automatic. It should work.

If clearing the "throat" in this manner still doesn't result in working LAN then check your cables. Connect a PC to the same cable or pull the cable from your PC's ethernet and plug it into the Sam.

I told you to reboot, otherwise you may get the problem you report here.

What internet router are you using? (make & model?) Perhaps it is simply a very wierd one that the AmigaOS does not like?

How are you connected to the internet router? Have you checked the cable with a PC?

With the Amiga set-up like *I* described earlier, reboot, wait 1 minute after booting, and then try this at the shell:
ShowNetStatus

What does it report? This should help us determine what you is going wrong. PLEASE answer this question!

Thats a good suggestion. I found that if I had *both* ethernet ports set-up, then neither worked!

@Gothmog

I have not tried the "shownetstatus" as you described. I will do so and let you know what happened.

I did do the reboot, however, I always wait until it "times out" looking for the connection before the reboot. I doesnt seem to be relevant though. Unfortunately after a reboot it nothing is 'available" and there is no "connection" saved in the internet folder.

I will setup my system again tomorrow and let you guys know the results. The last couple of ideas offered I have definitely not tried as yet.

Also,, On another computer, open a browser and enter the http address of your router (if possible)
and make sure 192.168.1.1 is a correct setting for the LAN system. Not the Internet settings.

@ChrisH

hi All:

Ok here is what I get in detail.

1. I type in "shownetsetp" and I get this:

Local Host address= 0.0.0.0 (on interface 'PPC440EP')
Default gateway address = not configured
Domain name server = 127.0.0.1

2. I tried the suggestion of entering the minimum (I did update the domain server name tho to what it reports above). I rebooted and then:

3. "Host lookup failed. No DNS entry found" when I use a browser

4. Typed in "shownetsetup" and it gives the same information.

arrgh! However, the local host address of 0.0.0.0 is probably wrong, no? and not having DNS configured almost has to be an issue. Clearly I am screwing up a "setting" somewhere.

...but this progress in that I know something is not right with the DNS setting and likely with the local host.

@Gothmog
Progress of a sort! But it shows that DHCP is not working AT ALL, almost as if it could not see the network. Some suggestions, please do them in order:

1. Are you waiting at least 1 minute after booting, before using shownetstatus? DHCP can take a while to work in the worst case.

2. Please check that you only have ONE interface listed (in Interfaces). If not, then delete everything except one for ppc440ep_eth, then reboot & try again with shownetstatus.

3. Plug the ethernet cable into the Sam's OTHER port, then reboot. Wait 1 minute, then type shownetstatus again - what does it say? If no success, then please plug cable back into the correct port (0 should be at the edge of the board, 1 is closer to the middle of the board.)

4. Please check that the network cable works - try it with another computer.

5. Make sure you are plugging the Ethernet (network) cable correctly into the Sam's port. It needs to go upside-down, and should click when inserted.

If all of that does not help, then OS4 *may* be incompatible with your router. (In that case I can help you manually configure it correctly.)

PLEASE SEND ME A PRIVATE MESSAGE if/when you have a chance to try these tests & post an answer, as I otherwise likely won't notice it.

Hi Chris and all,

I fixed the problem accidentally.

I didnt really like the power supply that came with the ITX case I purchased, so I swapped it out with a regular 400W power supply and....

YUP! everything works.

I thought is was very strange that only the Network card would be affected by a quirky power supply on a SAM. As soon as I booted up, I could tell it was configuring itself and as soon as I opened a browser....it just worked.

I hope this helps others with wierd quirks like this.... I would not have linked a network card issue (with the rest of the computer working OK) having to do with something like an troubled power suply.

I lost a lot of what remains of my hair over this!
