@WolfToTheMoon

There's nothing wrong with his macs, flash player just gets slower with every release and powerPC macs suffer the most. A 1.6ghz Atom (in my last two netbooks) can barely cope with youtube at anything over 360p although I think some of that has to do with the intel GMA950 they were stuck with since it was unusable full screen but that can't be the sole cause since my macbook coreduo (1.8ghz) coped fine even with 720p.

@TheMaskedMuchacho

Atoms without a dedicated HD-video coprocessor or nvidia's Ion platform cannot play HD video... It should play 360p and 480p Flash. I haven't noticed any slow-down with Flash over the years. I think it's probably the fact that the PPC version is not getting the same attention to optimization and testing as x86(and now ARM).

Anyway, to comment on the netbook news.

I think it's the step in the right direction for Hyperion and will attract a few new users(maybe even me if it's really around 300$).

Hovewer, I do feel 400 MHz might be too low to do anything other to boot into WB and have a "look around". Maybe some 68K gaming could be done. Also, does the poverVR chip use system RAM? In that case, I can see getting into trouble using more programs at once or Timberwolf with multiple tabs.

Even so, a very nice change from the 2500+ euro nonsense.

@WolfToTheMoon

I said PPC and agree with what TheMaskedMochacho says:

"flash player just gets slower with every release and powerPC macs suffer the most"

He/she is right.

My dual Atom 1.5Ghz Netbook does 1080p, even on Youtube Flash.

I agree.

I have got an iMac 1.8GHz PPC and it's useless for playing youtube videos (flash), browsing is still okish though.

Running Safari and GarageBand is going to slowland.

On my Mac mini 1,5 GHz youtube runs brillantly, but that one doesn't run OS X.

Hope that PowerVR will come with its own VRAM (64MB at least) even OS 4 is low memory consumption and machine is suposed to come with 512MB

Its not a change from 2500 euro pricetag, its addition - X1000 pricetag remains the same

No, that didn`t happen with CBM Amigas. "CUSA Amigas are x86" is true statement (goes would be change from something), please correct it.

I have much experience on a 400MHz e300 processor (Efika). It can be more than a toy, in fact it is uable for many things. Even youtube works to some exend with it. Depends of course on how well the OS and apps are optimized. But it is better than many ppl may expect.
And while Limebooks are available since a long time, I actually think this a rather good move. Albeit I prefer more cpu power and won't go for a Limebook/OS4, but for a Powerbook/MorphOS (5-10 times the cpu power).

Actually, CBM Amigas had CBM-made x86 bridgeboards. So, x86 was on amiga almost from the beginning

It would be good to have dedicated VRAM, but I doubt that LimeBook has it. It will probably use system RAM. 512 MB RAM is, I guess, enough for OS4 in most situations, bar possibly running multiple tabs in Timberwolf. What's the memory usage situation with OWB-MUI?

How does it compare to the $20,000+ nonsense coming from a certain other source?

@Thread

Forgive me if I've just not been paying attention, but does anyone have a link for the 400MHz claim?

The 5121 uses a shared memory model.

@T-J

There's no confirmation it will be clocked at 400Mhz, it's just that the known e300 core based ones are running at 400Mhz, but the LimePC Z9 (which "seems" to be the candidate here, again just conjectures) is reportedly clocked at 800Mhz. So it's wishful thinking at this stage. Here's what we "know", it's a summary of what Ssolie said during AmiWest: http://www.thevideojunkie.com/amiga/page2.html

it's clocked at 400 MHZ - 800 DMIPS

@Shufflepuck

just a quick word of warning: don't take my IRC notes as 'the unvarnished truth' as i might have made a typo in my excited frenzy. whether or not the new netbook will be performant enough for everyone's needs, we'll just have to find out. i don't recall any mentioning of clock speed during steve's keynote, although michael posted a video of it on cloanto's vimeo page.

if anyone wants to review said video and come up with a proper transcript, that would be outstanding.

@thread

to everyone who couldn't make it, we missed you, but it was a pleasure to again sit and talk with amigans, many of whom i have come to know from this site. be sure to try and come next year. amiwest is what we make it, and there was tons of stuff to play with: commodore 128D, all the classic systems, AROS (including free CDs and boot disks for 68k systems), a bunch of morphOS desktops and notebooks, the FPGAreplay arcade, the MCC-216, SAMs, classics running OS4.1, the X1000, amigakit, jens' new stuff, classic software and hardware for sale, video toaster systems, the lot.

seriously, it's worth it. drive, fly, take the train: next year's amiwest is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of october 12-14, 2012. let's make next year's amiwest the biggest and best yet!

OK, checked now...

the specs of the announced netbook are pretty much in line with MPC5121e, which is 400 MHz... it has a 200 MHZ RISC co-processor for multimedia tasks.

@Shufflepuck

As been said a few times already, the LimePC Z9 sports a 8.9" screen while the one spoken about here should be 12".

@Zylesea

I can assure you that ACube has absolutely no specific knowledge about this project, let alone the clockfrequence of the CPU.

Yep, but Hyperionmp said it's a "special configuration", so one can always hope for an higher clock speed

Whatever the speed I'll buy it in an heartbeat, I've always wanted a portable NG Amiga..

Sadly it is more likely it will have shared model

Quote:

Yes, AT Sidecar and similar provided XT/AT functionality on Amiga, without need for PC. But AmigaOS or the machine never went x86. Also, if you check Amiga world premiere software emulation was provided to run "DOS software" (all this was done in early time where there were no bussines apps for AmigaOS). So idea is to enable PC users to use Amiga, not other way around (Amiga to become fully x86). Poor justification for rebranding and name licencing. You should know al these as I do, but keep up the propaganda.
As told true is that Commodore USA Amiga branded computers are x86, but that cannot apply to previous models as desired (or even that is not true yet since no CUSA Amiga has been demonstrated or shipped).

But this is all off topic.

Lets hope that AmigaOS 4 nettop will be based on some next year PPC Freescale e300 based solution that would be a bit better and price wize and not exactly LimePPC offer. Once its revealed
