Moderators, please keep an eye on this thread.
Oh, and feel free to move this to a more apropriate forum if needed. I chose OS4 harware as I think it will be foremost about OS4...... and hardware....

Yeah, sorry bout that, post fixed now....

I'll start...

- What OS direction should be chosen ?
- Should it be software or hardware based project ?
- are you willing to invest with the possiblity (should it fail) to get al your money back ? (to see if we can get 500 investors)

- An emulator running on generic x86/64 hardware, able to run the two PPC Amiga OS's
- Fund or hire coders with the single purpose of porting important apps

@Metalheart

It's completely pointless so long as CUSA can't be bothered to define what they can and can't do.

Yep these threads are pointless. They simply serve CUSA's delusions of importance.

@Metalheart

Regardless of your intentions its in the wrong forum. It should be under Amiga Inc. and Offshoots so it doesn't appear on the front page.

@djrikki

I think it should be on the front page, but I'm unsure about the forum though...
Thats for the moderators to decide

lets try to be little constructive

AROS + modern, enough powerfull not expensive and fully supported X86 hardware in retro design of Amiga 1000
+ possible some special software for AROS we miss now

@Metalheart

My previous suggestion, in the thread prior to the non-news item, was to work with Acube to make Sam systems cheaper. i.e. produce them in bulk.

Leo made no comment and has since changed the goal posts. What is the point of CUSA's involvement if the community have to front it.

If you take people's suggestions and make a poll I think you should pass it by Leo first. There is no point in people voting for an option that would/could never be accepted.

@Rob

Frst this thread seeing what kind of things people can come up with, then we can see what way to go for in a poll, in whatever form or way.
We'll see when we get there.

Keep em coming people !

Many of us are lacking accelerator boards. Let's join 500 people and ask to upgrade our old machines, C= will do if we are 500. Let's place new ppc onto our beloved machines !!!

If we only use this thread for suggestions and DO NOT discuss anything we will be fine....

@Metalheart

Hopefully correct. For some reason all of the rest of my poll ideas got chopped off when posting. Hence why I edited my post, but it didn't matter... still chopped off. Will try once more...

x86 desktop with AOS4 port + license
x86 desktop with AROS + license to use AOS name
x86 desktop with Morphos port + license to AOS name
ARM desktop with AOS4 port + license
FPGA arcade + nice case
Natami + nice case
'Amiga on a chip', (be that FPGA or A/Clone) game system/simple PC + nice case
Handheld 'Amiga on a chip' game system
ARM (or similar low cost CPU) mini-PC with AOS4/Aros/Morphos ports, i.e. Roku-like, used for streaming HDTV, Amiga titles, etc.

@Metalheart

Build a new high-end (as X1000 speeds) AmigaOS4 capable laptop.
OR port of AmigaOS4 to run on already available FAST laptop HW.

As requested by MetalHeart... a repost on this thread... a viable suggestion to BigBenAussie/C=USA.

@BigBenAussie

Genuine suggestion amongst the rabble:

No-one has suggested this yet, everyone is purely talking about what hardware they could bring to the table.

What if Commodore USA decided to bring new software to the two major Amiga platforms?

Without scouring the internet for solid examples, it is legal in some instances to charge for Open Source software. So IF this included OpenOffice as a wild example - I think every AmigaOS and MorphOS would buy it in a heartbeat.

My Poll draft 0.2:

To me it seems C= wants "it" to be a HW+SW product that they can later sell as they wish under the name Commodore AMIGA, it limits some other options. And that the product should increase the userbase.

If it's PPC based, it can easily run all modern NG AmigalikeOS.
If it's ARM based, any AmigalikeOS would loose applicationbase and cause further split.
If it's x86 based, it's good for laptop & desktop but not yet everywhere + the loosing of application base.

So, to me it seems it would have to have AOS4 (optionally also all others).
It would require a deal with Hyperion for AmigaOS & money paid for the port.
Optimally it should be in co-operation with (one of the) existing AOS HW partners.
It could include for example OpenOffice bundle as a part of the deal (benefitting all parties).
It might require R&D money spent to accelerate Gallium3D+OpenGL work + port of Unreal3D or some other high end 3D development tool. (especially in case of the retro+AOS4 games console)
And the product should be prebuilt&installed&ready to run. (- monitor)

What are the community's needs/wish for next HW (2H/2012).
(related to C= USA Christmas offer)

C= should:
o1-participate in bringing the NetBook to market (sooner+better drivers+higher volume, 350EUR)
o2-bring a new ultra low end desktop/retrogames console to market (around 300...500EUR)
o3-bring cost reduced SAM460 kind of HW to market (co-operation with ACube) (around 500EUR)
o4-bring the power2people MPC6810 HW to market (~500EUR?)
o5-partner with A-Eon to bring their next HW to market (X2000? ~1000EUR)
o6-bring a NATAMI+PPC+PCIe comboHW to market (~800EUR?)
o7-PPC PCIe card for x86 (~400EUR?)
o8-something else

Prices should include AOS4 license.
Later (or at the same time) MOS and AROS could be brought to the HW platform.
After community desides what they want, C= will estimate the price, and if then 500 people commits to it, R&D will start ... If community can not commit, we need to think something more affordable(etc).

More details

For option 1, the NetBook:
- MPC5121e based, because there is no other usable options @ PPC land (yet).
- 1GB RAM, 400Mhz, sata, SD, 2...4xUSB...
- There is no preorder system ongoing for netbook, this could be a start of it
- OS is already being ported for it, extra $$$ from C= would accelerate driver development + add SW content

then poll2 for o1:
-Netbook with AOS4 and ”all” drivers 300EUR
-Netbook with AOS4 + bundled with Gallium3D+OpenGL+OpenOffice+Timberwolf 400EUR

For o2, the ultra LOW END desktop/retrogames console:
- MPC5121e based, unless there is a suitable 3D chip to use with some PPC SOC CPU
- LimePC X1 or macmini or Wii style (new >1Ghz design with GPU chip would be better)
- the graphics could be also generated via some large FPGA (it would also handle legacy I/O)
- A lot of support SW would be needed, like click and play any retro games + online contents shop
- one example of the "case" for retro games console:
http://www.amigans.net/modules/AMS/article.php?storyid=19

then poll2 for o2:
- LimePC X1 clone with 1GB RAM with AOS4 + Gallium3D+OpenGL + click and play retro + net shop 300EUR
- New PPC SoC board in macmini style case (4USB in front, 2USB in back, >1Ghz, 1GB RAM, r700 integrated or on PCIe x4...8, 500GB HDD) SW as above, 500EUR
- New PPC SoC board like above, but with FPGA GFX, one free PCIe x4...8 slot 500EUR

For o3 and o4 (they target the same range of computing, the MID range):
- >1Ghz PPC SOC as the CPU, =>1GB RAM, =>500MB 3D RAM, 500GB HDD, GPU
- PPC460ex + the Sil GPU or MPC6810 with integrated GPU or...
- PCIe slots (1* 4x...16x + 1...2* 1x), 4...8x USB ...
- drivers should be ready!
- could come with FPGA and/or xena or localbus header for expansion
- focus in bringing MID range price down

then poll2 for o3 and o4:
- PPC460ex based, cost reduced, drivers ready, localbus available for expansions (FPGA,xena) 500EUR
- MPC6810 based (no special localbus on the SoC?) 600EUR
- tbd...

For o5 (the affordable High End):
-Most likely P5020 based (dualcore 1.5+Ghz), done by Varisys for A-Eon + C=
-Little bit smaller board than X1000, while similar performance, except perhaps only PCIe8x and no legacy PCI
-xena if still wanted by Varisys & Community
-SMP must be available and drivers ready
-OS must be able to use 64bit address space (for something at least)
-1...8... GB DDR3 RAM support

then poll2 for o5:
- P5020 system, 2GB, 500GB HDD, R700 GPU 1000EUR
- same as above + Gallium3D+OpenGL+OpenOffice+Timberwolf 1100EUR
- tbd...

For o6 (variant/alternative of Mid Range):
- Large FPGA to deliver basic GFX (eg NATAMI), >1Ghz CPU, PCIe x4...x8, etc...
- AA+ GFX, Stable drivers, AOS4.

then poll2 for o6:
- with 800...1000EUR
-tbd

For o7, the PPC on a card for x86 and for passive busboards:
- tbd??

For o8, something else:
-68k,FPGAonly,AOS4emubox for x86,...
