Project Dogwaffle and its successor PD Pro also are fully scriptable thru standard LUA language as they inherit the idea of Amiga ARexx Port feature available on DeLuxe Paint...

Here is a script emulating Amiga graphic mode HAM:

| There seems to be an awfully large focus on DPaint vs Photoshop recently.
DPaint was an amazingly good program in its day, before modern tools were invented and before anything higher than 8 bit colour palettes were commonplace.
While its simplicity and advanced tools (for the time) made it the de-facto choice for all bitmapped pixel artwork, it was itself surpassed by other programs which worked on graphics cards in higher resolutions and colour modes (Photogenics being the obvious choice n the Amiga).
The ability to work with layers, and to blend between them is a godsend in graphics production today. Photoshop started the trend towards this, and many other programs adopted and developed in that area (GIMP being a prime example).
Naturally, these programs while powerful, do have a much higher learning curve than DPaint did. But that doesn't make them inferior, it just means you have to put more effort into learning how to best get results from the tool you have. But once mastered enough, things become second nature and the additional features these programs offer is evident.
For a new DPaint to work, it would have to offer a similar level of functionality and features as those found in more established applications. A fall back to its roots for pixel editing wouldn't go amiss, but a far more extended and modern package is both expected and required.
Sketchblock is a massive step in the right direction for a modern Amiga DPaint replacement program. Andy has done a great job in working and expanding on that over the last few years. _________________ Test sig (new) |

| Just look at the names: how can you compare what was basically a PAINT package with what is mostly a PHOTO retouching package? Totally different scopes...

I may be wrong but in a quick look that script doesn't seem to define a 16 colour palette so the results are slightly uglier (if it ran realtime it would leave the base 4 bitplanes untouched and would only write 2 bitplanes so it would be pretty fast, but it's not accurate I guess). Defining 16 colours is a must if you want to increase quality and it's possible to modify some palette colours on each line (each certain copper instructions you could redefince one colour) so quality could be higher. Sure you can do that.
If you are free, please you can advice people at PDPro staff and suggest them how to change the script, in order to improve a better HAM scripting. _________________ "When the Amiga came out, everyone [at Apple] was scared as hell." | Good news everyone!
For everyone delusional enough to think Amiga could pass Photoshop as #1 GFX platform if Electronic Arts just released the sources to the original Deluxe Paint... They just did.
But yes, I agree. It has nice "historical value". Thank you, Electronic Arts! |

| Good news indeed and I fully intend to take advantage of that code and play with it, but... I gotta ask -- to no one in particular, mind you :) -- why just version I? Why not V? I mean, seriously, what do they have to lose by releasing any version of DPaint in this day and age?
Inquiring minds wanna know... :)

Adobe did the same with Photoshop... I guess they didn't release v7 because they are Adobe ? :)
I wish they would release kickstart 1.x sources this way too (and I mean kickstart only, not disk based stuff). Unfortunately some companies (Cloanto ?) are still selling it today... _________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/ |

This would probably require also consent of Hyperion. Has anyone "snapshot" of 1.x era OS sources? |

Well, maybe this has more to do with the Museum than EA or Adobe. Maybe that's the only version the asked for. That said, I can see why they might only release V1 since Photoshop is still an active and selling product? DPaint, OTOH... we know EA gets half their revenue still from that product, right? |

If you plan on going any further than "just see how people used to code back then", better read the license rather carefully, it's quite restrictive, especially regarding distribution...
Also, couldn't we do best of both worlds? Combine Deluxe Paint with Adobe Photoshop since they're both open source!1! |

I was just discussing with one guy about the state of MSX-DOS. Last official version was 2.3, after which there have been less official bugfixes upto 2.44 I think, which came out around 2010. There's also completely re-done from scratch version called Nextor, latest alpha version from march this year.
Anyway, the official sources were mostly unavailable for a while, and of course during that time, people disassembled the binaries, adding comments and documentation. Nowadays when people have actually seen the official sources, many have concluded that the disassembled version is actually more useful, as it's better documented etc. (probably due to the original being written on more restricted hardware) - same might also be true with (at least some well researched key parts of) AmigaOS. Especially if you consider starting a new project from 1.x sources, instead of reverse-engineered 3.1 code. Also, if you start new implementation based on reverse-engineered functionality, you're not restricted with any license terms the original code might have.
But as with Deluxe Paint, that would indeed be nice historical value. Some versions of MS-DOS sources have also been released btw. |

Deluxe Paint is a nice program and was a big step forward with its 32 colors and square pixels, but Koala Painter came first and it could paint in colors on the Commodore C64 and even use a graphics tablet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KoalaPad |

Maybe they are planning on resurrecting a modernized version on Android & iOS?
That definitely could be done, Electronic Arts style.
Actually I can almost imagine all the improvements.

It is a little step in the right direction, but remember that Deluxe Paint became a Killer Application since its version III... Not before.
It was pointed it was sorta like Koala Paint on C64 but with steroids...
Nothing could be ever false than it. Deluxe Paint was simply fantastic as it reacted very well to mouse, giving user a great response even with the "rough" standard mouse of Amiga, that was sure far from being precise as today 1200DPI laser mouse devices.
