I doubt this going to be a laptop you're going to work on while traveling on the train or on the buss, in most cases you will find a power plug to power it.

It is wise not try to compete with high mobility laptops. Some years ago portable PC cases where available from different companies.

I can't find empty cases for them today, only full rigged PC systems:
http://www.theportablepc.com/portablecomputer.htm

It's still a good for factor if you want to have PCI cards.

Or something like here:

@thread,

I am coming late to this thread, so I might have missed a few of the posts in my quick look through all of the messages posted, but is the purpose of this exercise ONLY for an AmigaOS4.x compatible device?

Have any of you considered the easier route of putting a MiniMig, or FPGA Arcade Replay board into a laptop case and running AmigaOS1.x to 3.x instead?

Both of those choices certainly have smaller form factors and lower power consumption, and a portable device using either of them could be quite popular. Plus, in the case of the FPGA Arcade Replay board, future expansion is planned with the proposed 68060 daughter card, w/USB and Ethernet ports, as well as even more RAM.

Just a thought.

@amigadave

But people want modern stuff (USB, PCIe, ...) so they probably want modern software too i.e. software that can't be done on OS3.x

Yes; Finally they where discussing OS independent
No; There is nothing like a ready to use Laptop case for motherboards with an ITX form factor, even if the Mini PCI slot on the Sam460 could solve some minor problems.

So summarising:

A sam460ex (any other mini-itx/flex-atx solutions) powered laptop with extra USB, a decent battery (for up to 3 hours), onboard graphics (my dream would be a PCI or PCI-Express gfx card), a 15"-17" screen.

The other thing to consider is the keyboard and trackpad. You can get USB keyboards with trackpads inbuilt but is it supported by the OS?

Also the language layouts...

@amigadave

I actually started by mentioning 460 as a second step after getting a minimig to work. Minimig requires vga to lvds off of ebay, other parts would be mostly the same (simpler DC-DC instead of picoPSU, but still).

Yes, I use a wireless KeySonic keyboard/trackpad. They also do a wired USB one.

@all

My first thought with an AmigaOS4 laptop was the size of the board and the fact that I have a 440.

I thought the 440 was smaller than the 460 and better suited to being made into a laptop.

For me the onboard audio and onboard video are quite enough and as a starting point to see if a laptop is possible surely we could live with 512mb for development purposes anyway.

Should I take a screwdriver to one of my old laptops and just see where I end up?

HI All

Why did commodore not offer AmigaOS when this was about https://tecnopolis.ca/aixtp/tphistory.html

OS was not full Powerpc but OS3.9 could use a 603 accelartor board so porting to the laptop may not have been that hard. The price is nice and high so it fits in with Amiga prices lol

@g01df1sh

Because Commodore had gone bankrupt by the time this was released

@1Mouse

I can alter the design of the case so it can accepts both boards but do ACube still produce the mini 440?

@TheDaddy

Do you mean the 440ep as opposed to the Flex, is so then no, however not sure the Flex is produced any more either.

Always keep in mind most AmigaNG OSes still don't support power management, shutdown or sleep modes.

This is more hardware missing such features than anything in software.

This would be interesting if you want to take the risk.

If the laptop is out of commission anyway, go ahead.

I've got 4 old cases.

Has anyone on here ever put a mini itx mobo pc/amiga or other and put them in a laptop case before?

@g01df1sh

Also the 1st "AmigaOS" that could run on PPC without the need for an actual 68k CPU was released in 2000 (MorphOS 0.x).
