@kas1e

right !!

@all
why whe have to use Ambient when we have Workbench?
AmigaOs have the Workbench from it was born...
look like some people like have the other big patch thing like was Pos or ScalOs or the Dopus Magellan desktop replacement...
To this people i wanna ask why you are asking this things? If you like Ambient is more simple Buy a low price Mini,Pbook or G4/G5 and install Morphos... or try to find a Pegasos2...

Why not just use the intersting routines from Ambient and back port them to Magellan Ii?

Because facepalm ?:)

Its the same why in workbench we not have parts of filer, or why in wb we not have parts of dopus5, or why in ambient we not have parts of dopus5 (like inbuild ftp client), and so on. In theory its all can be done, on practice no one will worry becuase of many reassons (no devs, no time, no motivation, hobby, etc).

Is Ambient used in the latest Morphos put kin the open source version?

Yes, all source codes of everything which should be open are on mos's download page, and latest ambient, and latest vpdf, apdf and co.

Because ppls want to have one os with all sort of software and have all sort of choice. To be not stuck with something, and be religus lunatic and repeat all the time "only real aos its aos with wb!" , or "only real mos is mos with mui4" , or "only real amiga its ocs with 68k".

OS its not only desktop. OS its many components. User may like some components, but dislike another. I don't like WB, its limited ancient crap full of patches. Its pure wrong today to have it like this and from logical point of view, and from programming point of view, and from any other point of view. The same as have mui3 api, when there is mui4 (which at last sorted).

If you want to have any new user on your os of choice, there no needs to sounds like fanatics, and says "wb is cool ! its enough for me !" , its may enough for you if you do nothing with your os. But anyone who want use aos today will found WB strange and ancient crap (while, as i say, some other parts of os he may like). And thats why there is dopus5. And that why any other desktop is good to have: because of choice. Because not everyone are fanatics of name and labels folower, and because saying "all is fine" mean no progress at all

@kas1e

For many years there where no hardware development and people where complaining. Then Acube/Aeon presented their hardware (one lowish end/lower price and one high end/high price) which gives people options and they still complain.

Some people will complain for the sake of it

More options are good, and if a developer finds time and motivation to develop XYZ software, then great!
Regardless of if its original or a port/inspired by others work.

If it works and some people find it helpful, its a good thing imho!

Wb is cool just because gave you the opportunity for have a desktop replacement
Now we have mui 4 ... and the team can be switch the Gui on it , and i hope can make the thing like drag & drop useful programs in the windows like Os X do or one thing that for me is really importand "the back" button like aros or Mos ...

I dont wanna a desktop replacement i wanna a better workbench more modern...
i dont wanna Ambient ... i wanna a BETTER and Modern Workbench...
I dont wanna use Magellan 2 functions is a replacment i wanna the Workbench did this function...

But first of all i wanna first Memory Protection
I wanna a simple Samba integrated with workbench
And more other thinks i find on the modern Os ...
... but in Workbench

@thread

perhaps a new thread about discussing wb/filemanager replacements would be needed ...

but my 0.2c:
- I like WB (in Amigish way), it should be improved, though.
- Some file management I do in WB, some in dopus4, some in filer etc.
- I would love to see some superb filemanager to be a new standard ... perhaps some Dopus5 variant that I can tune up for myself
- I have not used any really nice file managers elsewhere (linux, windows etc. implementations are far from perfect, most are horrible, even though some things can be learned from those)
-neither is Ambient perfect (I might like it more once getting used to it, initially it just looks like some linux/mainstream file manager)

And I wanna one million dollar but there is no high chance

Seriously perhaps there will be a improved WB someday but propably it is not high priority compared to other task and if you look at the speed of development on AmigaOS (except 3rd party developers) there is no high chance in near future. So be happy with what you have and let others be happy if they like Scalos, Magellan or perhaps even Ambient. Kas1e talked about winning new users who use modern OS like that on Mac, Windows or Linux and that propably are easier to attract with a modern desktop than with current WB. And choice is always good. On Aros now there is Wanderer, Scalos and Magellan. on MorphOS also Magellan and Scalos so AmigaOS should not lag behind.

And I wanna one million dollar too ...

I know good the team have an hi priority timeline project scheduled ... but i just say what is my point of view about os desktops replacements... and the other things that for me are needed... from 1994 the most inportant is the Memory Protection.

About new users... i dont belive too much in it ... more in old user thats are return afters years of astinence (like me)

but is it not more propable that "old" users prefer to use UAE or even old hardware than buying expensive new PPC based hardware?

Both UAE and classic hardware have severe limitations. That is why even expensive NG hardware has its buyers.

"old" users want to use the old software and environment and not buy new expensive hardware. At least it is that I think. Most users from that days are today using PCs with Windows or Linux (and some Mac) and are certainly hard to convince to spend thousands of dollars for a hobby (if they can afford at all there is still real life).

back to topic...

I think if someone ports Ambient it is not a loss for anyone (except for this person loosing time). Who prefers WB can keep using it. I gratulate AmigaOS users to have a advanced MUI similar to MOS and hope that Zune will be updated to that level too. Then it becomes easier to support all platforms (if wanted).

ambient does not looks like mainstream filemanager, it looks like DOpus 5 with decent mui graphics. AmigaOs4 users used to lack of nice gui design in OS4 so everything in MorphOS looks like linux gui for them.

It is matter of (personal) taste. I never liked default MorphOS theme/icons - too much blue...
For me, OS4 theme/icons look much better.

Ambient can be configured (like all mui programs) to use typical magicwb style (left part of image).

You already have memory protection and in os4 , and in mos too. What you want its be able to remove frozen/crashed task from memory and system still will be clean, as well as you want intuition/input/etc never freezes on any of those oses : but all of this is not because there is some "another" memory protection, its because there need more work to make some areas be not writeble and blalbal, in other words memory protection by itself will not make your os stable as win32 :) Its another things which make it stable. And answer on "i want memory protection" is that you already have memory protection, just not of all areas, not of necessary ones. There is just need bunch of heap work to spend on all oses , and there is no devs (specially skilled devs). You may want 3d, smp, anything else, but there is just no devs and simple things take years. Imho enjoy what you have , or you will end up like all those previous fanatics :) Not be in hope there will be anything soon or later, even if anyone promise you anything :)

@kas1e

No just need machine stable like OsX and not like win32
and the opportunity to kill a task and make the ram free again without .. crash, freeze, stop and after reset the machine in hardware.

I m not asking to no one kas1e ... about it ... just it is the first think more needed, before all the desktop replacement and after all the other useful enancement that will make in time more and more instability of the system because not a real memory protection or evolute or like you wrote win32 memory protection.
for the remain thinks you can write everything and spend much more key typing but everyone understand good what i was asking.

ps: i din t compare Mos to Aos or Aros and i dont understand ...why everytime someone start comparing ? ... i dont like because they are all in the same situation if i have to compare i start do with something 15 years more advanced compared with our poor os.

Look like the people on the web who start comparing how much is G5 in booting with morphos vs OSx ... (this is insane)...

Some of the demos need to be updated.

WBMan no longer functions now that there's no longer a WBStartup directory. "NewStuff" also doesn't work, "Failed to create application". "SaveLoad" has been given a project icon so won't run, if you change it to a tool is will work.

WBStartup still can be used, as well as "NewStuff" tested right now and it works (through on beta). Newstuff also used some new classes (rawimage, aboutbox,etc) so maybe you somehow delete them or kind
